Track & Field Hosts Michael Johnson Classic

MEET CENTRAL

WACO, Texas - Baylor's track and field teams will host 15 other schools for the Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium Saturday.

Field events will kick off the day at 11 a.m. with the javelin on the infield of the track and the hammer throw event behind the west grandstands. The afternoon section of running events will begin at 1 p.m. and the evening section will start at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, ages 2-17. All tickets are general admission. Baylor students get in free with a valid student ID. Gates will open at 9 a.m.

A ceremony to recognize the 21-member senior class will take place before the evening running section at 4:30 p.m. A fireworks show will conclude the meet. Besides current athletes on Baylor's 12th-ranked men's team and 10th-ranked women's squad, a multitude of former Bears will also be in action.

All-Americans LeJarald Betters, Marcus Boyd and Jeremy Wariner will all compete in the evening session of the 400-meters, which is scheduled to run at 6:10 p.m. Former All-American BU sprinter Woodrow Randall will run in the 100-meters, while the most-decorated All-American in school history, Tiffany Townsend, will run in the evening 200-meter event. In the 400-meter hurdles, 2013 Big 12 Champion Christina Holland will compete at 7:20 p.m. Other alums in the meet include Brittany OgunMoken (400 meters) and Lakadron Ivery (long jump and 200 meters).

Along with former Bears, plenty of high-profile former collegiate athletes will be in action, including Sanya Richards-Ross (400 meters, Olympic gold medalist), Charles Silmon (100-meters, NCAA champion) and Bershawn Jackson (400 hurdles, Olympic bronze medalist).

Other teams scheduled to be in attendance include Angelo State, Fresno State, George Mason, Houston Baptist, Nebraska, Northern Illinois (women), Oklahoma Baptist, Stephen F. Austin, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, Tulsa and UT Arlington.

In total BU has 62 competitors scheduled to take part in the meet. Baylor's men's team will have 28 participants competing, while the women will have 34 athletes in action.

Currently, Baylor has 13 performances that rank inside the top-20 in the NCAA for 2015.

On the men's side, sophomore Trayvon Bromell owns the fastest 100-meter time in the country at 9.90 and the seventh-fastest 200-meter mark at 20.56. Junior Bryce Grace is in a tie for sixth with a 110-hurdle mark of 13.71. Sophomore George Caddick ranks 13th in the quartermile with a time of 46.26. In the field events, Felix Obi has the fifth-best triple jump with a school-record leap of 53-3.5 [16.24m].

The men's 4x100-relay squad of Bromell, Kevin Harris, Grace and Bromell are the country's sixth-fastest quartet at 39.22. In the 4x400-meter relay, the quartet of Richard Gary, Harris, Brandon Moore and Caddick hold the country's fourth-best time of 3:05.26.

For the women, Tiffani McReynolds boasts the country's best mark in the 100-hurdles with a time of 12.75. Rachel Johnson is seventh in the country with a 10,000-meter school record of 33:11.98. Waco-product Annie Rhodes is tied for fifth in the pole vault with a school-record leap of 14-3.25 [4.35m]. Meanwhile Brianna Richardson is third in the triple jump, after a jump of 42-9.25 [13.34m] at the Texas Relays. In the discus, Cion Hicks is tied for 19th with a throw of 175-5 [53.47m]. Finally in the heptathlon, Jenna Pfeiffer is 19th by tallying 5,256 points.

After Saturday, Baylor will head to Des Moines, Iowa, to take part in the Drake Relays on April 22-25.
