Women's Doubles Bracket WACO, Texas - Two Baylor women's tennis players, Ema Burgic and Blair Shankle, will begin their run in the NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
That duo will also open their NCAA Doubles Championship run on Thursday. Individually, the twosome was among 49 at-large bids into the 64-person singles bracket, while together they are one of 10 automatic selections into the 32-team doubles draw.
In singles, Burgic will take on Hayley Carter of North Carolina at 10:30 a.m. The senior from Bosnia and Her is ranked No. 22 in the latest ITA listings and has an 18-7 record on the season with a 16-6 mark in dual-match play. Burgic was selected to the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship, but did not play due to injury. Carter is ranked No. 16 in the country for the Tar Heels.
Shankle will face Stephanie Wagner of Miami at 12 p.m. This season, Shankle is 29-6 and 23-2 in dual-match play. She is currently ranked No. 41 in the country. The sophomore from Dallas, Texas, will be taking part in her first singles championship, after playing in the doubles championship last year. Wagner is the No. 11 player in the country.
In doubles action, Burgic and Shankle will play the country's eighth-ranked duo of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger of Auburn. Burgic and Shankle are 11-4 overall and 8-4 in dual-match action. The pairing has not played together since March 22. Before teaming up with different partners, Burgic and Shankle beat doubles teams ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the country. In the latest ITA rankings, the BU pairing was ranked No. 14.
Last year, Shankle earned ITA All-America doubles honors by advancing to NCAA quarterfinals with partner Victoria Kisialeva. Burgic was invited to the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship, but did not participate due to injury. She did earn ITA All-America doubles accolades in 2012 with partner Nina Secerbegovic.
