THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Baylor women's tennis senior Ema Burgic opened her run in the NCAA Singles Championship with a 6-3, 6-4 upset of No. 16 Hayley Carter of Duke Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Meanwhile, Burgic's teammate Blair Shankle, ranked No. 41, fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, versus Miami's 11th-ranked Stephanie Wagner to end her season at 29-7 in singles play.

The 22nd-ranked Burgic controlled things in the first set with a strong service game and then battled through some serving woes in the second set to win the first NCAA singles match of her career. She was selected to participate in the 2013 tournament, but had to withdraw due to injury.

Burgic improved to 19-7 on the season and 7-6 against ranked foes to advance to the NCAA Singles Championship second round.

TOP QUOTE #1
"We're so happy for Ema. Injuries have kept her out of this event the past two years. To see her healthy and playing well is a beautiful thing. I'm sure she is enjoying every second of it." - Head coach Joey Scrivano on Ema Burgic's win

TOP QUOTE #2
"I felt like I was tougher than her in the important points of the match today. I started off really well and was aggressive with my serve and attacking her backhand. I was executing the game plan like I needed and I combined everything that we worked on this season. In the second set, she started executing more and made it tougher on me, but I think I was very mentally tough today." - Ema Burgic on the victory

TOP QUOTE #3
"Blair has made a lot of progress this season. She's improved as much as any player in the nation this year. Today she did a really good job, but lost anyways. She'll bounce back and be ready for doubles tomorrow. I'm very proud of her and the impact she has made on our program." - Scrivano on Shankle's loss

WHAT'S NEXT
Ema Burgic will now take on No. 57 Madison Westby of USC on Thursday at 10 a.m. On the doubles side, Burgic and Shankle will begin their NCAA Doubles Championship run at 3 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center against the country's eighth-ranked duo of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger of Auburn.
