THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANTONIO â '¬" Baylor soccer earned its first win of the season with a 7-1 decision over Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. The Bears (1-4-1) used a pair of goals by
Precious Akanyirige to push ahead of the Cardinals (2-4-0), and poured on five more scores to give
Paul Jobson his first win as head coach of the program.
BU's first tally came in the 14th minute as Katie Daigle served a pass into the box for a header by McKenna Martin that deflected to Akanyirige for a tap-in rebound. Akanyirige then struck again in the 23rd minute, getting a cross from Lauren Piercy in the middle of the box and firing to the left post for a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, UIW cut the deficit to one after an Emily Halal 20-yard strike for a goal from the left wing in the 48th minute. But Baylor responded rather quickly, scoring in the 52nd minute after a pass from Sarah King on the left wing led to a Julie James laser to the back of the next from the left side of the box.
King then was on the other end of a goal in the 58th minute as she took a pass from Marissa Sullivan, turned and fired a strike from the middle of the box to the right post for a 4-1 lead.
In the 74th minute, Amanda Hoglund's cross to the middle of the box was gathered by Lauren Piercy for a finish in front of the goal. About 12 minutes later in the 86th minute, Jackie Crowther corralled a loose ball in the box for a shot that found the back of the net. BU ended its scoring in the 87th minute as Hoglund had the ball in the box and beat the UIW keeper with a quick shot.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"Obviously it is nice to get that first win off your back. More than anything, though, I'm just glad to see we continued to play the way we've been playing. We've told the girls that the goals will come and it's nice for them to see that come true. We were efficient with our shots and were able to take advantage of the opportunities we've been creating all season. I'm proud of their effort and focus. Once they scored to make it a 2-1 game, we put our foot down and finished strong." â '¬" Head Coach Paul Jobson
