BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On today's game
I think it's only appropriate that these two (freshman Beatrice Mompremier and freshman Kalani Brown) are in this press conference because this one (freshman Beatrice Mompremier) carried us in the first half, and this one (freshman Kalani Brown) carried us in the second half. It's not only big for our team, but it's big for them as individual players. They are working hard to get better. I thought that their presence on the floor was as good as they've given us in conference.
On coach Mike Carey saying this game would be won in the paint
I don't know. We get a lot of credit for being big, and we are big, but like I said, these kids are freshmen. For them to put a game together today on the road in this environment against a big post player like (junior center Lanay) Montgomery, helps them get better as a player. When they get better, then we get better as a team. I just can't tell you how big these two were today.
On confidence in her players
She (freshman Beatrice Mompremier) starts for a reason. I want to get the jump ball. She's athletic. I want her to do some things and when she fatigue, then I bring this one (freshman Kalani Brown) in. She can score with her left hand which is hard to block. She can battle in there, and then I can go small. I thought KK struggled today against size. I thought size was a factor somewhat. Our defensive presence allowed us to not let West Virginia get more than one shot each time. It was a good priority to not let them go to the offensive glass. I thought we did a pretty good job of that.
On the first quarter shots and struggles
Let's give credit to West Virginia. I say it every time I play them. Coach Carey makes those girls guard you. They're physical. They guard you, and I thought when the game started, we didn't handle the jump ball very well. When West Virginia was up in us, tight defensively, we turned it over three or four times at the beginning of the game. Then we settled down a little bit and got back in the game. You have to take care of the ball on the road, at home and in the playoffs. It doesn't matter what sport it is. If you have too many turnovers, you don't win. I was looking at our assist to turn over ratio. It's hard to think we played a game where we only had six assists. That's pretty low for us. Nine turnovers a game isn't that bad, but you want to have about 18 or 20 assists. I thought we rebounded the ball well, but we should. We're pretty big in there.
WEST VIRGINIA POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Mike Carey
On today's game
We were shorthanded a little bit. I thought we played hard, but didn't play smart. This game was going to be won in the paint and that's exactly how it was won. We just didn't do a good job. When (junior center) Lanay (Montgomery) was out there, we didn't do a good job guarding. We were in foul trouble with (sophomore forward) Teana (Muldrow) in the first half. That hurt us. They are a good team, and I think we're a good team. I just think they can bring more bodies off the bench than we can, especially inside. We just don't have those bodies to bring off the bench inside right now.
On Baylor's Beatrice Mompremier
In the first game, our team guarded her. In the first game, we fronted her. Today, they sat behind her. This game we thought that we would just play her from behind. I kept saying, 'front front front,' especially when (junior center) Lanay (Montgomery) was out there. We let her (Beatrice Mompremier) catch it anywhere she wanted. She's too good to do that.
On the early lead
It was big until we had to sit some people down because of fouls. We were shorthanded. One of our posts didn't play, and then (sophomore forward) Teana (Muldrow) picked up her second foul and we had to put (senior guard Bria) Holmes at the four. (Junior center) Lanay (Montgomery) puts her hand up, and she says she's tired. I just don't have the people to run in there, especially at the four and five position right now. We're deeper on the perimeter than we are on the four and five.
On freshman guard Tynice Martin and the team's overall shooting
We settled. They're late with the three's. Now, they switched their five on us a couple of times, and we shot a jump shot over them instead of attacking them. That just comes from inexperience. You have to know who switches out on you. If their five switches out on you, I'm not going to shoot over, I'm going to take her to the rim. We didn't see that.
