Jan. 5, 2016 WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team is ranked No. 11 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings of 2016 that were released on Tuesday.
Last season, Baylor finished No. 8 in the country, after producing a 28-7 record and making the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2011 and the NCAA Round of 16 for the 10th time in the last 11 years.
"We don't have to talk about rankings with our team, because it doesn't make a difference," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It's a new year and every team is at zero including us. We're all trying to prove ourselves all over again. Whether we're No. 1 in the country or 101 it won't affect how we prepare."
BU opened 2015 ranked No. 15 in the country.
Baylor will be looking to capture its 11th Big 12 regular season title in the last 12 years and the ninth league tournament crown in the last 11 years.
Individually, the Lady Bear duo of Kiah Generette and Blair Shankle are ranked as the 12th-best doubles tandem in the country. The pairing went 4-1 in fall collegiate play with victories over the country's No. 35 and No. 36 duos and their only to the nation's seventh-best pairing.
Baylor is one of just seven schools nationally to have both its men's team and women's squad ranked in the top 15. The Bears are ranked No. 4 nationally.
The Lady Bears will start the 2016 season by traveling to face Hawai'i Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. CT.
