Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On rebounding in the first halfà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I brought that up at half time. I think we did a lot better on that in the second half. We out rebounded them for the game. Now, you think about that, we made up for a lot of rebounds that we were not getting in the first half."
On guarding Breanna Lewisà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"You have to understand that their offense was difficult to guard, but we did not give up 10 threes. We made as many threes as they did, so they are going to get it in there. When we are up tight on them, they are going to get the three ball off. They went in there in the second half, and we did a better job at least altering her shots. She is going to get her points when you are guarding four perimeter players as tight as we were guarding them. I thought number one, we kept them from shooting a ton of threes. They only shot 17, and last game they shot 32. We also kept them from making a lot of threes, so we gave up her points."
On K-State's defenseà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"They did that at our place, but what we did at our place is we made shots early. We did not get behind. It kind of deflated them. I thought Senior Night and trying to get into the NCAA Tournament, so they were pumped and ready to go. We knew they would be. We just got behind and had to rush some shots to settle down there in the second quarter. I thought getting to the foul line, from the day we started talking about K-State, they do not go to the foul line much, but we do. We have to attack what ever zone we see if that is a 3-2, 2-3 or a 1-3-, we just needed to attack it and get to the foul line enough to win it."
Forward Beatrice Mompremier
On facing Breanna Lewisà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It was more of a defensive game for me. Learning to front and play better defense, but this week we were working on it real hard. She is a more experienced post, so working with someone that knows how to move their body made it difficult to guard."
Guard Niya Johnson
On getting down by 10 early in the first quarterà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It is hard when you dig yourself a hole in the fist quarter. They came out hot and had a lot of momentum. We just weathered the storm and encouraged each other. We did the little things ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" like rebounding on both ends and just tried to keep Breanna Lewis out of the paint."
On being a part of four straight Big 12 Championshipsà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It is something huge. You do not want to be a part of the team that stops the traditions. Just us getting our own just feels great. They do not know the feeling yet. Just do not take these moments for granted."
KANSAS STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statementà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I think a couple of things. I think that this game tells me how much better of a basketball we are than we were a month ago. And I think we knew that, but not up until we continued to string together consistencies. I think Baylor is an outstanding team. I think they are a team that has all of the pieces ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" physicality, the ability to go get shots and they had 20 assists on 22 field goals so they pass the ball extremely well. They have all of the pieces of a Final Four team. I thought our group battled, but I think we just had trouble finding offense. I think we got a little worn down towards the end and maybe did not have quite the bounce to rebound as well as we did in the first half. Baylor made the plays. We had our chances and opportunities out there, but we just could not quite make them."
On the defensive schemeà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Well, [Niya] Johnson is such a good point guard, so we wanted to get some size up there in front of her, because she has such great vision. We wanted to block that vision as much as we could. The best person to do that is [Breanna] Lewis. We had not really played that this year, but we felt like this was the best chance to at least neutralize her some. So that was the thought process behind it. We had some early success with it, but give Baylor credit. They really made some good adjustments and in the second half were more aggressive with it and got into some gaps. I have no qualms with our group. I thought we fought hard and our execution could have been better at times, but when I look back, I think I am going to see decent execution as well."
On getting over the hump against Baylorà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Well your opportunities are going to be limited. They are such a good defensive team. I do not have the exact numbers, but I think they had held the last three teams they have played to 36, 38 and 41 points or something. We, actually, found some offense, but we did not just quite make enough plays. You have to get over the hump to get it down to a two possession game, but it was always a seven point game. We are going to look back though, and see we had opportunities. The thing I liked about our group was that we dug deeper today when we did not make plays. We are starting to become more resilient. We have seen that in some stretches. I think our team is becoming tougher, more poised, and that is what it was going to take to have an opportunity today."
Junior center Breanna Lewis
On playing her best basketballà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I feel like each game I am improving, so yeah."
On the team's current playà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I feel like it is a great time to be playing our best basketball. Each day, my team and I are getting better and better as far as communication and knowing each another. We are comfortable with one other and the way we are playing is showing that. We are just taking each game at a time."
On reaching 1,000 career pointsà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I do not really keep up with how many points I have. For them to tell me I was so close, was just a good accomplishment. I put in enough hard work for me to reach it, so hopefully I can get 2,000."
