THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas --
The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team captured a 4-2 victory over No. 51 Oregon Friday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis.

Baylor (4-2) dominated doubles action over Oregon (2-2). Kiah Generette and Kelley Anderson picked up a Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Moments later, Rhiann Newborn and Karina Traxler tallied a 6-1 triumph over Kennan Johnson and Christi Woodson.

In singles, Blair Shankle cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win on court four over Woodson to put the Bears up 2-0. The Ducks got on the board next as Newborn was beaten by Sangwan, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 3. spot.

With a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory by Kiah Generette over Nia Rose at the No. 1 spot, Baylor took a 3-1 edge in the contest. Oregon again cut the deficit to one as Ferreira suffered a 6-0, 7-6(4) setback to Kluiving at No. 5 singles.

Following that loss, the Bears still led on courts two and six as Theresa Van Zyl owned a 7-6(1), 2-1 advantage and Traxler held a 6-4, 5-4 lead, respectively.

Traxler's opponent Daniela Nasser had jumped out to two-break leads in both the first (4-1) and second (3-0) sets, but the freshman Bear battled back each time. However, the match would be decided in a second-set tiebreaker, which Traxler won 7-4 to secure the 4-2 victory for the Bears.

With Traxler's win, Van Zyl's match went unfinished.

TOP QUOTE #1
"Overall, the team has the right mindset. They did a great job responding after the Tulsa match. Their effort and their energy were really good, and have been good for most of the season. Today, I feel like the difference was they played with a lot of greater purpose, and they played more accountable tennis." - head coach Joey Scrivano on the match

TOP QUOTE #2
"We're still a work in progress and there's a lot of room to improve, but we were 10 percent better than we were against Tulsa, and that makes a big difference. I'm really proud of their energy. It's a team effort to win these types of matches. Thankfully, we have a lot of players who compete hard and just don't give up. I feel like to win team matches, you have to get it from multiple courts, and we got that today." - Scrivano on how the match was won
