THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -- The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to No. 46 Washington Sunday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
For the second time in 2016, Baylor (4-3) dropped the doubles point. Each of the BU duos struggled to hold serve early and fell behind quickly.
On court one, Blair Shankle and Theresa Van Zyl were down 4-2 and were unable to rebound, losing a 6-3 decision to Miki Kobayashi and Nour Abbes.
Minutes later, Rhiann Newborn and Karina Traxler suffered a 6-4 setback to Tami Grende and Stacey Fung at the No. 2 spot to give the Huskies the doubles point.
Baylor tied the action up at one point apiece as Blair Shankle cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court four over Elianne Douglas-Miron.
However, moments later the Huskies retook the lead, 2-1, as Kiah Generette fell, 6-3, 6-4 to Abbes at the No. 1 spot.
At that point all four remaining matches were trending toward a third set.
Newborn was the next player to wrap her match with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Grende at the No. 3 position. In a back and forth battle, Newborn won the final three games of the deciding set, including two breaks to take the match.
With the scored now tied, 2-2, Baylor was down on third sets on court two (4-0), court five (3-0) and up 4-2 on court six.
Van Zyl ended up losing her battle at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to the 65th-ranked Fung to put Washington back into the lead, 3-2.
The match was ultimately decided at the No. 5 singles position. Gabriela Ferreira had lost the opening set 7-5 and then fallen down 3-2 in the second set, before running off four straight games to capture a 6-3 set victory. In the third and deciding set, Ferreira fell into a 5-0 hole and couldn't rebound dropping a 6-2 set to allow Washington to clinch the match 4-2.
With the match decided, freshman Karina Traxler secured a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 position to make the final score, 4-3.
