THE RUNDOWN
MANHATTAN, Kan. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" The 51st-ranked Baylor women's tennis team tallied a 4-1 victory over No. 65 Kansas State Thursday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
The victory stopped an eight-match losing streak for the Bears, who improved to 5-10 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 play. The loss dropped Kansas State to 7-5 on the year and 0-1 in Big 12 action.
The Wildcats captured the early momentum in doubles as Rhiann Newborn and Gabriela Ferreira dropped a 6-2 decision to Sara Castellano and Palma Juhasz at the No. 3 spot.
However, Baylor roared back to capture wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to clinch the opening point. First, Karina Traxler and Theresa Van Zyl downed Millie Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas, 6-4, at the bottom of the lineup. Meanwhile, the 17th-ranked pairing of Kiah Generette and Blair Shankle mounted a comeback against Carolina Costamagna and Iva Bago at the No. 1 spot, securing a 7-6(4) triumph to tally the opening point.
Kansas State recorded its only point of the day as Ferreira dropped a 6-1, 6-3 contest to Livia Cirnu at the No. 6 position.
The Bears then rolled to three victories in the next three matches to finish to close out the win.
Traxler bested Stretton, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win for Shankle over Costamagna on court three.
Generette clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Castellano at the No. 1 position.
