THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -- The 66th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team produced a pair of wins Wednesday while facing Prairie View A&M and Northwestern.
Baylor improved to 7-11 on the year and has won three of its last four matches by downing the Panthers, 5-2, in the morning at Hurd Tennis Center and then coming back in the evening to upset 36th-ranked Northwestern, 4-2, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
MATCH ONE
The Bears won the doubles point, despite losing the opening match. First, Vanessa Phan and Hadley Young suffered a 6-0 setback on court three to Tatiana Rhul and Shaddae Findley.
BU responded with a victory by Elizabeth Profit and Theresa Van over Neharika Rama and Sydney Thomas, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. Baylor then held a 5-3 advantage at the No. 2 spot and went on to clinch a 6-3 triumph to take the doubles point.
In singles, the Panthers quickly tied up the action as Young fell to Ruhl, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot. BU went back in front with Blair Shankle's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rama on court one.
Ferreira's 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot put BU up 3-1, but seconds later Phan dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Maxwell at No. 5 singles.
Kiah Generette clinched the match for the Bears by registering a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Thomas at the No. 2 spot.
To close out the match, Traxler took a 6-2, 6-3 win over Findley on court four.
MATCH TWO
In doubles action, the Bears rolled to the opening point victory with a 6-0 triumph from the 15th-ranked Shankle and Generette on court one over the No. 40 team of Erin Larner and Alicia Barnett. Shortly thereafter, a 6-3 victory by Newborn and Traxler against Brooke Rischieth and Jilian Rooney at the No. 3 spot secured the opening point.
The Wildcats tied the match at one point apiece in singles play with Generette's 6-2, 6-4 loss to Barnett on court three.
Blair Shankle put the Bears back in front with a 6-3, 6-2 upset over 81st-ranked Larner at the top of the lineup.
Northwestern squared the match back up at 2-2 as Kelley Anderson suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Alex Chatt at the No. 4 position.
The Bears closed out the match with two more straight-set wins on courts two and six. First, Van Zyl bettered Rischbieth, 6-4, 6-4, at the bottom of the lineup and then Rhiann Newborn captured a 6-4, 7-6(3) upset victory over 40th-ranked Maddie Lipp at the No. 2 spot.

- Baylor is now 5-5 at home and picked up its third win against a ranked foe in 2016.
