DALLAS, Texas - Baylor volleyball opened up its 2016 spring schedule with a pair of impressive five-set victories, knocking out SMU, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12, and UTSA, 25-17, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13.
In the early contest with SMU, Tola Itiola took over the match, crushing 23 kills on a .517 attacking clip.
With the departure of senior middle Adrien Richburg, the door is opened for Itiola, as well as freshman Jaelyn Jackson to take on a more significant role for the team moving into the 2016 schedule.
"We have been very focused on our middles this spring, and both Tola and Jaelyn Jackson made a huge impact in our success today," said Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre.
In the second match, Katie Staiger showed her dominance, pounding in 22 kills to help the Bears to the second five-set win of the day.
The squad will continue working through its spring schedule, travelling to Houston to play in the Houston F.A.S.T Complex tournament on April 9.
BU will continue to measure its talents against some of the best programs in the southern region of the U.S., with a number of NCAA Division I programs converging for the Houston tournament.
