April 7, 2016 WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" The 51st-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will play four matches over the next three days as it continues both Big 12 Conference and non-conference action.
"Every match we play is the Super Bowl," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We are fighting to give ourselves a chance to play in May. The reality is we have our backs against the wall and we need to give it everything we have to make the NCAA tournament."
The Bears are set to face No. 28 TCU in Fort Worth on Friday at 2:30 p.m., before returning home for matches on Saturday and Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center. On Saturday, Baylor will compete in a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., before wrapping up the weekend against No. 12 Texas Tech at 3 p.m. Sunday.
BU holds a 9-12 record and is 2-2 in Big 12 play after dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 17 Oklahoma State Sunday. Before that match, Baylor had won five out of its last six matches. At home, the Bears are 7-6, while sporting a 2-5 road record.
Junior Blair Shankle, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, has won her last six singles matches and is 12-4 overall. Last time out against OSU, Shankle, then unranked, defeated No. 33 Katarina Adamovic 6-0, 6-0 to earn her a national ranking of No. 76.
In doubles, Shankle and Kiah Generette are 12-5 and have won five straight. The duo sits at No. 12 in the rankings.
The 28th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs are 11-2 and 3-0 in conference play. When playing at home, the Horned Frogs are 10-1. TCU's lineup features the ranked duo of Caroline Wegner and Seda Arantekin at No. 34. TCU's only two losses came early in the season against No. 18 Ohio State and No. 14 Stanford. Since then, the Horned Frogs have won nine straight matches.
Against TCU, Baylor is 17-15 all-time. The last time the two teams met was last April with the Bears taking a 4-0 victory in the Big 12 Championship semifinals. Overall, Baylor has won 10 of the last 11 series meetings.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff is 1-20 on the season, with their only win coming on March 19 against Grambling State University. Last time out, the Golden Lions took a 7-0 loss to Incarnate Word. The match against Baylor will be the last of the season for UAPB.
Baylor and UAPB have not met previously. The 10 a.m. match will be played on the Hurd Tennis Center's Riverside courts, while the 1 p.m. contest will be played on the facility's Grandstand courts.
Texas Tech, ranked No. 12, holds a 17-2 overall record and a 2-1 record in Big 12 play. The Lady Raiders lineup features two ranked singles players in Sarah Dvorak at No. 101 and Gabriela Talaba at No. 107. In doubles, Lynn Kiro and Alex Valenstein sit at No. 38 and Talaba and Valenstein sit at No. 64.
Texas Tech has won 13 of its last 14 matches. Last time out, the Lady Raiders faced off against No. 30 Kansas and came out with a 4-2 win.
BU leads the all-time series over Texas Tech, 26-12, including wins in five of the last six matches between the two schools. Baylor produced a 4-0 win over the Lady Raiders to clinch the 2015 Big 12 Championship title.
The first 200 fans at the Texas Tech match will receive a free black Baylor Tennis t-shirt and all fans are encouraged to wear black for the #EveryoneInBlack match.
After this busy weekend, the Bears will host Incarnate Word and Rice on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, at the Hurd Tennis Center.
For the three home matches, live scoring will be available for each, while live video will be available for the second Pine Bluff match and the Texas Tech contest. A live blog will also be available to follow the match against the Lady Raiders.
Two sessions of the Cub Tennis Program will be happening this weekend at the Hurd Tennis Center with the first schedule for 12 p.m. Saturday and another at 2 p.m. Sunday.
