INDIANAPOLIS - Baylor's track and field teams will be represented by 23 entries and 22 athletes in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships Thursday through Saturday at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
BU will have 13 entries on the women's side and 10 more on the men's side vying for a chance to get into the top 12 in their respective events and earn a berth to the championship finals site in Eugene, Ore. At the NCAA West Preliminary meet, competitors in individual events will be pared from 48 to 24 in the first round and then down to 12 in the second round. Meanwhile, the relay races will only have one round of action, trimming 24 entries down to 12.
The Baylor women will have 12 entries in individual events, along with the 4x400-meter relay. Of those entries, Baylor has six currently ranked among the top 12 in the West region.
On the men's side, Baylor has nine in individual events and the 4x400-meter relay team. The Bears have three entries currently ranked among the region's top 12.
Pole vaulter Annie Rhodes boasts BU's highest regional rank heading into the competition as she has the second-best clearance in the region at 14-7.25 [4.45m]. The Bears also have two third-place regional marks in Wil London (400m) and Felix Obi (triple jump), who both won Big 12 titles in their respective events.
Baylor has two athletes competing in two individual events: Cion Hicks (shot put, discus), and Malik Wilson (100, 200 Meters).
Baylor's participation in the NCAA West Preliminary Round will begin on Thursday, May 26, at 4:30 p.m. with the running of the women's 400-hurdles. Friday's action for BU will begin at 12 p.m. with the women's discus and on Saturday events start at 3 p.m. with the men's triple jump.
