WACO, Texas - Former Baylor track and field sprinter Trayvon Bromell will begin his run at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Saturday in the 100-meter heats at Olympic Stadium in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Olympic Trials Performance: Bromell earned his spot in Rio by placing second in the 100-meter finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in early July.

In the final, Bromell equaled his personal-best time of 9.84 (1.6m/s) to finish just .04 seconds behind winner Justin Gatlin (9.80) and .14 seconds ahead of the final Olympic qualifier Marvin Bracy (9.98).

The St. Petersburg, Fla, native, who competed at BU in 2014 and 2015, had the second-best reaction time (.147) and hung with Gatlin throughout the race as those two athletes cruised to gold and silver. Bromell advanced to the final by tallying the second-fastest time of the 21 runners in semifinal action. The New Balance professional won his heat in a time of 9.86 (2.0 m/s) with the second-fastest reaction time of anyone in the field at .143 seconds.

In the first round of action, Bromell tallied the fastest time of any athlete at the meet. He opened strong and closed even better to clinch the heat in 9.94 in a legal wind of 1.2 m/s.

On the World Stage: Bromell entered his first Olympic Trials with the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100 meters of 9.84, which he set at Hayward Field last June in the semifinal round of the 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships. He went on to place second in that final (9.96) to Tyson Gay (9.86) and followed that performance up with a third-place showing at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships. In March, Bromell won 60-meter gold at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships with a time of 6.47.

Baylor Highlights: In two seasons in Waco (2014-15), Bromell won two NCAA individual titles (2014 outdoor 100 meters & 2015 indoor 200 meters) and five Big 12 titles. He garnered four NCAA All-American performances and 10 All-Big 12 accolades. He rewrote the record books as he holds all 10 of the fastest 100-meter times in BU history, while also tallying school records in the indoor 60 and 200 meters.

Baylor track and field athletes have claimed 13 (10 gold, three silver) Olympic medals, starting with C.M. King's two silver medals in 1904 and continuing through 2008 when Jeremy Wariner won a gold and a silver and Reggie Witherspoon captured gold. From 1992 through 2008, BU athletes claimed at least one medal in each Olympics.
