WT Topples No. 23 Northwestern

THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -
The Baylor women's tennis team passed its first road test with flying colors, toppling No. 23 Northwestern, 5-2, to remain undefeated, 6-0, on the young season on Friday night. It is the first ranked win of the season for the Lady Bears, who are off to a 6-0 start for the seventh time in program history and the fourth time under BU head coach Joey Scrivano.

The Wildcats scored first, grabbing the doubles point after Rheeya Doshi and Lee Or defeated Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa and Angie Shakhraichuk, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Northwestern's No. 15 pair of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp followed with a victory over No. 9 Elizabeth Profit and Blair Shankle, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles.

Despite the doubles loss, the Lady Bears stormed back to earn the first singles point with Shakhraichuk's No. 6 singles victory over Nina Van Oost, 7-5, 6-1. Rhiann Newborn, who is undefeated in singles play this season, defeated No. 87 Lipp convincingly, 6-2, 6-3, to give Baylor the lead, 2-1. It marks her second ranked win of the spring season, as she defeated No. 93 Guilia Gludetti of Wichita State, 6-4, 5-7, 12-10, at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic.

In Profit's second singles appearance of the season, she routed Doshi, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. Junior Theresa Van Zyl clinched the match result for the Lady Bears with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Chatt at No. 4 singles.

With the teams deciding to play it out, Northwestern earned their second point as No. 110 Or edged Hinojosa in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Shankle, who is ranked No. 9 nationally, closed action with a three-set triumph over Erin Larner, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
