Feb. 23, 2017 WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" The No. 10 Baylor women's tennis team (6-1) continues its string of road matches, taking on Miami (1-2) on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) and No. 2 Ohio State (9-1) on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both dual matches will be played in Columbus, Ohio.
"We have two really big challenges coming up and I want to see our program continue to make strides on the road," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We have progressed well so far, but there is still work to be done. It is important for us to stay mentally tough, focus on the process and keep building for May."
The then-ranked No. 29 Lady Bears and the then-ranked No. 12 Hurricanes were forced to abandon their last meeting on Feb. 15, 2016, in Coral Gables, Fla., due to inclement weather. The Hurricanes lead the all-time series against Baylor, 7-6.
After a season-opening victory against Brown (4-0), Miami suffered consecutive losses against then-ranked No. 22 Texas A&M (4-2) and No. 47 Texas (5-2). The Hurricanes possess three ranked singles players, including No. 6 Sinead Lohan, No. 94 Estela Perez-Somarriba and No. 100 Maci Epstein. They also boast a No. 54 ranked doubles duo in Yolimar Ogando and Silvia Fuentes.
In their last meeting on March 5, 2016, in Waco, the Buckeyes defeated the Lady Bears, 4-0. Ohio State and Baylor are tied, 2-2, in the all-time series.
Ohio State began the season with seven consecutive victories over nonconference opponents. The Buckeyes took home the championship title at the ITA Kick-off Weekend, closing with a win over Alabama. After making it through the ITA National Team Indoor Championship quarterfinals with a 4-3 triumph over Oklahoma State, Ohio State dropped its semifinal match against North Carolina, 4-3, its only loss of the season to date.
The Buckeyes bounced back after the loss, defeating Michigan, 5-1, and Penn State, 7-0. Ohio State has seven ranked singles players, including No. 1 Francesca Di Lorenzo, No. 42 Miho Kowase, No. 53 Anna Sanford, No. 57 Gabriella De Santis, No. 84 Sandy Niehaus, No. 117 Olivia Sneed and No. 120 Ferny Angeles Paz. They also have two ranked doubles pairs in No. 26 Francesca De Lorenzo and Miho Kowase and No. 47 Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus.
The Lady Bears were rewarded for their strong start, which culminated in an upset victory at No. 23 Northwestern, 5-2, with a No. 10 national ranking this week despite its first loss to No. 10 Michigan last Sunday, 7-0.
Senior Blair Shankle remains undefeated in dual match play (4-0) and is ranked in the top 15 nationally at No. 14. Fellow senior Rhiann Newborn jumped into the rankings at No. 105, while the doubles duo of Shankle and sophomore Elizabeth Profit is rated No. 18.
Following this weekend's dual matches, the Lady Bears return to Waco to face Old Dominion on March 2 and No. 9 UCLA on March 4. First serve against Old Dominion is set for 5 p.m., while the UCLA match begins at 1 p.m., at Hurd Tennis Center.
