BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
Opening statement...
"They came out on fire. Complement those guys, they came out ready to play. They had a lot of energy, they had a lot of fight in them. They just punched us right in the mouth."
On the tough start...
"I told them after the game in Lubbock that people are going to throw their best shot at you. You've got to come out of the gates, guys, ready to play with focus, with energy, with intensity and they did. Now that being said, we came back and had a chance to win the game and had two bad possessions. I give our team credit for that. We never quit fighting, we never quit playing, but you can look at the stat sheet ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" we got kids that showed up for a half tonight."
On the mentality in the fourth quarter...
"We played with intensity, we played with urgency, we played like we were 15 behind. Well, that's how you have to start the game and we haven't started like that for two weeks. We have been good enough to not start good in games and because we were bigger than they were we would score. Good teams come out of the gates ready to play and I've been preaching that for weeks now. That's why we scored ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" we started playing with a sense of urgency."
On moving forward...
"We are not out of it. We've got five to play, it just makes it a little tougher. We've got three on the road and two at home. It will either be a wake up call for some of them or some of them will go in a shell and do like they did tonight. "
Senior G Alexis Jones
On the guard play...
"Their guards take some big shots. The guard play has to be better than what we were today. We have to learn how to figure out a way when we are going through tough times like this. Figure out a way to dig deep and get open screens and contest those shots a little bit better where it is a little bit harder for a lot of players to just come off screens and just knock down jump shots like that."
On Nina Davis and her play in the first half...
"I'm disappointed, upset and mad, but me and Nina just need to figure it out. We're seniors and we've only got a couple more games left and we need to figure it out these last couple of games."
Sophomore C Kalani Brown
On her dominant play at the end...
"I just played with a sense of urgency. Whatever it was to help my team, whether it be rebounding, or scoring, whatever she needed me to do I'd do it. We needed an offensive presence."
On tying up the game late...
"We changed the momentum and I though we were just going to take off. Obviously it didn't go the way we planned. We didn't execute a few times."
TEXAS POSTGAME QUOTES
Texas Head Coach Karen Aston
Opening statement...
"I think the first thing I would say is that that was a really good basketball game and it's a credit to the Big 12 because it was a highlight game and we have been scratching and clawing in every game trying to win Big 12 games and I think you just saw tonight how good the Big 12 was. Second of all, it was a tough game and I'm really proud of our players, I thought they were tough tonight. They work really hard, I've said all along from the very get that this was a really fun basketball team for me to coach, I have a lot of fun coaching them, we all do, and I just thought that they were really tough."
On this being an important victory for her at Texasà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Our team has really been focusing all year long on being in the moment and what is the most important game. It's the game you're playing in that moment. If I'm going to sit up here and say, 'yeah,' then I'm not following what our team's goals are. Every game is important. K-State was just as important as this game and the next one. Kansas will be just as important as this one."
On importance of being battle tested on the roadà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"The girls understand what we've been preaching all year long so I don't want you to think that we're not happy that we won and that this was a good win for our program ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" it is, but I mean I think there are a lot of other teams in our league that are good and we have to stay focused. We haven't won anything, they're still the defending champions. So we have to stay focused on what we're trying to get accomplished and what our goals are."
On key to finding and making shotsà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Our execution is getting so much better, their chemistry. It took us a while to get comfortable with each other, we had a lot of new players and we had new players at new positions and so it's been an evolution for our team to be comfortable offensively and defensively, but I do think we are that."
Junior G Brooke McCarty
On making shots early on and her buzzer beater at halftimeà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I think we were just feeding off of each other. We all had some open shots and I think everybody came out did pretty good, we started the game off really good. So I think it was just feeding off everybody's energy, we were all scoring so I think that's what kept the energy going."
On relief in ending losing streak against Baylorà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Definitely not. I know that coach talks about being in the moment so we're just staying in the moment because every game is important. So, I think that game was really tough and we just have to keep building from there."
Sophomore G Ariel Caron-Goudreau
On pressure to hit outside shots because of Baylor's sizeà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦ "They're very good shot blockers, and so we knew that if we were going into the paint we had to go up strong or pull up over them because they are very good shot blockers."
On what this game means for the rest of the seasonà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We're definitely living in the moment. We're going to enjoy tonight, but we have Kansas next."
