March 21, 2017 WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" The No. 15 Baylor women's tennis team (12-4) challenges No. 20 Texas A&M (10-7) at Hurd Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 22. First serve is set for 5 p.m. (CT) in Waco.
Cub Tennis, for children 11-years-old and under, will kick off the day at 4 p.m. Equipment is provided, but all participants must wear athletic shoes and clothing to take part in the youth clinic.
Texas A&M leads Baylor, 27-20, in the all-time series. The Aggies have won eight consecutive matchups against the Lady Bears, whose last win came on April 5, 2012, 5-2, in Waco. Last season, Texas A&M recorded 4-1 and 4-2 wins over BU.
"They've dominated us in the last four years and we have to do a better job of fighting at every position," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We haven't done that in the last few times we played them. We've given away too many wins at positions and haven't competed well as a team against them. I expect that our team this year is different and that we are going to fight at every spot. Win or lose, we're not going to have any regrets. The goal for us is to compete hard and embrace what we do well."
The Lady Bears have gained momentum from a solid win over then-ranked No. 32 USC, 4-1, at the BPN Paribas Collegiate Challenge last Friday. Competing so well on an elite stage is a benefit for Baylor, one of two women's teams that competed at the event presented by Oracle Tennis.
"Our team really performed well against USC in that setting," Scrivano said. "The event had an NCAA-type feel because there were a lot of tennis fans there and it was more of a home match for USC. It was a good experience playing a tough opponent on the road in a really cool environment. Our players handled the pressure well and we've been able to embrace who we are. We got down early in doubles and fought back hard, and that's been the story for our team."
Leading the way for Baylor is senior Blair Shankle, who tied the program record for highest singles ranking all-time at No. 4 (Zuzana Zemenova) on Tuesday afternoon. She has been rewarded for her strong start to the season, which includes an 8-1 record in dual match play and a 4-3 mark against ranked opponents.
After the dual match against Texas A&M, the Lady Bears travel to meet No. 9 Texas Tech on Sunday, March 26. First serve is set for 1 p.m., in Lubbock, Texas.
