THE RUNDOWN WACO, Texas - The No. 13 Baylor women's tennis team stormed back to defeat No. 21 UCLA on Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The Lady Bears (10-2) notched a 4-3 victory over the Bruins (6-4) tying the all-time series, 6-6.
With the win Baylor is 9-0 at home and 2-2 against ranked opponents.
After the Bruins secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, Baylor responded with the first singles victory, when freshman Jessica Hinojosa topped Kristin Wiley, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 6 slot.
UCLA gained the edge again when Gabby Andrews defeated freshman Angelina Shakhraichuk at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3, but the Lady Bears continued to fight back. No. 105 ranked senior Rhiann Newborn bested Jada Hart in a long two-setter, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, and junior Theresa Van Zyl battled her way through a three-set match for the, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, victory at No. 4 singles.
The Bruins were able to tie it up, three-all, when No. 2 ranked Ena Shibahara handed No. 14 ranked senior Blair Shankle her first loss of the spring season, 7-5, 7-6, at No. 1.
Sophomore Elizabeth Profit responded when her team needed it the most, securing a comeback win in three sets at No. 2 singles. After falling behind with a 6-3 loss in the first set, Profit edged Terri Fleming, 7-6, in both the second and the third sets.
