THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -- The No. 13 Baylor women's tennis team (10-3) dropped a 4-3 decision to Tulsa (13-4) at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday night.
The Lady Bears took the doubles point with victories over Tulsa at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. After Baylor and the Hurricane each won a doubles game, the freshmen duo Jessica Hinojosa and Angelina Shakhraichuk rallied to win the tie-break over Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner, 7-6, at the No. 3 position.
Tulsa notched the first two singles points with consecutive wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to take the lead. At the No. 2 singles position, R. Leenabanchong defeated No. 105 senior Rhiann Newborn, 6-4, 6-1. Martina Okalova followed with a sweep of sophomore Elizabeth Profit, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot.
Junior Theresa Van Zyl scored Baylor's second point after defeating Mahitha Dadireddy, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. At the No. 6 spot, Marcelina Cichon's victory over Shakhraichuk, 7-5, 6-3, put the Hurricane a point above the Lady Bears.
Baylor continued to battle back, as No. 14 senior Blair Shankle tied up the match with a triumph over Ksenia Laskutova, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. The match result was decided at No. 5 singles, with Tulsa's Martha Matoula edging Hinojosa, 7-5, 6-3, for the win.
