June 1, 2017 TEMPE, Ariz. ÃÆ'Æ' ¢ÃƒÆ' ¢' ¬" Two singles players and two doubles pairs on the Baylor women's tennis team were included in the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Rankings for the 2016-17 season.
Senior Blair Shankle led the way with a No. 6 national ranking after a stellar season for the Lady Bears. She played her way to a 30-5 mark overall and an 18-2 record in dual match action in the No. 1 singles position. Against ranked opponents, Shankle went 12-5.
Shankle guided Baylor to its 13th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, where the team advanced to the second round for the 13th year in a row and the 14th time in program history before bowing out. She was selected as the Big 12's automatic qualifier and seeded No. 5 overall in the NCAA Singles Championship bracket and, after receiving the ITA Most Improved Senior national honor, Shankle reached the Round of 16 to shore up her first career singles All-American award.
Senior Rhiann Newborn earned a No. 120 final singles ranking. She had the best season of her collegiate career, compiling a 21-7 overall record and a 16-5 mark in dual match play while competing in the top three spots for the Lady Bears. Newborn earned All-Big 12 second team recognition and posted a career-high three victories against ranked foes.
Shankle and sophomore Karina Traxler were represented with a No. 39 rating after recording an 8-1 record as a unit. The duo was a perfect 4-0 against ranked opponents and faced Big 12 opponents in each dual match at No. 1 doubles.
Shankle and sophomore Elizabeth Profit were also included at No. 61 in the final release of doubles rankings. The pair went 9-6 on the year, including a 7-2 tournament record.
As a team, Baylor closed the year with a No. 17 national ranking. The Lady Bears went 22-7 on the year, including a perfect 15-0 regular season at home and an 8-2 record in Big 12 play. Against nationally ranked foes, BU compiled a 9-6 mark.
