THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -- Anchored by the defense, Baylor volleyball held Illinois State to a .000 hitting percentage to earn the team's first win of the 2017 season in three sets, 25-9, 25-15, 25-19, Saturday evening at the Ferrell Center.

The Bears (1-1) were led by middle hitters Camryn Freiberg and Shelly Fanning who combined for 17 kills and only committed one error in the three-set sweep.

On defense, the Bears outdug the Redbirds, 63-47, which was led by junior Aniah Philo with 18 digs.

The Redbirds (1-2) only led in the first set, 1-0, but would not lead for the rest of the night as BU jumped out in front for good. The Bears were paced by redshirt senior Katie Staiger, leading with 14 kills.

After a 7-5 lead in the opening set, Baylor went on an 18-4 run to close it out, 25-9.

The momentum wouldn't stop there. BU forced an early ISU timeout after freshman Hannah Lockin fueled a 7-0 run from behind the line. Freiberg collected three kills in that seven-point span.

The Bears were tested during the middle of the set, but three team blocks allowed BU to take the 2-0 advantage.

Freiberg and Fanning hit over .650 in the third frame, adding eight kills and cementing the 3-0 sweep at home.

TOP QUOTE
"Last night we were just never in flow, and tonight we were in flow most of the match. Serves were much better. Our defense can be really good. Yossi had a big monster block one-on-one early on and that kind of set the tone. Illinois State's a great team obviously -- they went five with Florida State -- so to keep them hitting .000 tonight says a lot what we're doing on defense. Our touches were just so much better so it really allowed us to get our middles going as well. Shelly hit .643 and Camryn just seemed like she was unstoppable with .438 tonight. It was great." -head coach Ryan McGuyre
