Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On shooting the three wellÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"I thought the opportunity was there to shoot it. I thought that it was very obvious when the game started what they were doing to Kalani (Brown) and (Lauren) Cox. We can shoot it. I tell people that all the time, we don't have to shoot a lot of threes when you have 6-7 and 6-4 inside. I think you guys saw tonight if we have to shoot it, we'll shoot it and keep shooting it."
On the defenseÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"I thought Dekeiya Cohen set the tone for us defensively and she guarded (Bridget) Carleton, who had I don't know two points at half I don't know. We didn't allow them to penetrate, reverse dribble, set flare screnes, we communicated, we talked, we didn't help ball side but we knew to help with the post players. I just thought our defense was very good in the first half. I have to give Dekeiya credit, she just looked challenged and enjoyed guarding Carleton."
On having more than nine in a game like thisÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"No, nine is good for me. It allows everybody to get betterÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦ At some point, I'm not looking at the score. I'm looking at those kids and seeing are you better today than you were two months ago? Where in the next two months can you help us in a closer game? I don't know if it some of them get that yet, they just look at the score and they coast a little bit. I look at why did you turn it over, why did you get beat back door, why did you let the girl penetrate, because I'm trying to figure out in the tight games who can help me. It's not about tonight, it's about a Big 12 Championship."
Sophomore Natalie Chou
On three-point successÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"We knew the scouting report and that they would try to double team the posts and the shot would be open. My teammates found me and knew where I was."
Sophomore Lauren Cox
On focusing on every gameÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"We just have to take it one game at a time, especially being so young. The upperclassmen have to make sure the freshmen are focused every game. Just like coach said, they're in the middle of districts last year and we're just getting started. We just have to make sure they are focusing and taking it one game at a time."
IOWA STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly
Opening StatementÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"Obviously, we weren't in the game from the start. That's a good Baylor team. Disappointed we didn't do some things to give ourselves a chance to compete a little bit. I think we missed our first seven shots and pretty much the game was over at that point. That's a great team, that's nothing new, nothing you guys don't already know. Obviously, this is a time where everyone has got to look in the mirror and evaluate themselves and see where we can move forward. It obviously keeps getting tougher and tougher in this league and we will see. Disappointing in a lot of ways and certainly want to give Baylor a lot of credit. Great, great team and nothing new from them."
Thoughts on the way Baylor shot the three ball today and how to stop itÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"For us, it's borderline impossible to guard them. We made a couple defensive mistakes early and they made some 3's. You go into a game like that and you need to pack it in a little bit and try and help with the big guys and I thought we did okay with that. We didn't do a couple things we practiced and when that happens, they make you pay for it. When they shoot like that, a lot of people are in trouble, if they shoot it like that and certainly they shot it great tonight.
Thoughts on whether Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox are the best 4 and 5 combo he will seeÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"I don't know enough about some of the other teams nationally, but I think because, like Bridget (Carleton) said, they are so skilled and play off of each other really well. Their system is not real complicated, but it's very efficient in what they do and how they do it. I think to their guard's credit they don't force bad shots, they take their turns. Tonight, was a night where, obviously, they felt that they had some opportunities and they made them. They are a complete team and certainly I think when you have that kind of length and size it challenges you at both ends of the floor. There are not many women's players that can impact the game at both ends of the floor like that and because of their length, it's hard to throw on a block. We tried to pick and pop and shoot some 3's and I thought we had some great looks early and we missed them all and it just kind of goes from there."
Junior Bridget Carleton
Thoughts on the difficulty of covering Kalani Brown and Lauren CoxÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"For sure, when having 2 players who start that are that size and that skilled and that powerful down low it's hard to guard for any team, especially, like coach said, when they have shooter and we are trying to pack it in and make them kick it out and not let them throw it in there, they have shooters knocking down 3's. It's difficult to guard."
