BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES

Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening statementÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"Another Big 12 game, hard fought. As far as the first half, we gave them too many points in transition, didn't do a good job in finding Jase, who had 18 points in the first half. Second, we did a better job not turning the ball over and getting transition points up. To hold them to 20 points in the second, that's a tremendous defensive effort. Typical Big 12 game."

On the defenseÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"We were playing good defense when we were set up, it was just the live ball turnovers and them getting easier ones. Texas had some looks that they made first half that they didn't make in the second half. I know they say the NBA is a shot making league. Sometimes you make them and sometimes you miss. They had some good looks and they missed. We did a better job not giving them second opportunity shots in the second half."

On the health of the teamÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"We've got nine active scholarship players. Year to date, we've had zero practices with all nine. Now we've finally got them and hopefully everyone stays healthy and tomorrow we'll have that first practice beginning to end, but this isn't the year to go into the Big 12 limping. If we can keep guys healthy and get a rotation we can get some things, but you don't want those long-term injuries when you're trying to form what you need to do in a league that's such a one possession league."

Freshman Mark Vital
On the change in defensive presence from first half to second halfÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"We just came and played harder. We talked at halftime that we needed to step it up and need to have the need to win. Coach Drew had a positive talk and he really meant it. We can see it in his face so it was very intense."

On turnover points in the second halfÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"Getting back and taking care of the ball was key."

Senior Terry Maston
On turning the ball over late and then taking the ball away from Jase FebresÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"I was really just trying to get the ball back. I know I made one mistake but Coach Drew always says, 'Don't let one mistake lead to two.' So I just wanted to get it back for my team and change the momentum."

On aggressive defense in the second halfÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"We always preach defense and to keep them under a certain field goal percentage so we were just trying to achieve that goal, play hard, and play for each other. We have to grind out every game in the Big 12 because it's so stacked from top to bottom. If we play hard like this and eliminate the small mental mistakes then we will look pretty good. Every game will be a grind so we just have to come together and get it."

TEXAS POSTGAME QUOTES

Texas Head Coach Shaka Smart
On what happened in the final five minutes...
"Well, we were able to cut their lead down to 3, and I felt like our guys had a good level of momentum in terms of our competitive spirit and the way we were communicating and attacking, but then we got tentative. We passed up a couple shots that were really good looks that we need to take, and then we didn't execute. I thought the other night, against Iowa State, we really executed down the stretch, and this was the flip side of that. When you combine that stuff: not being aggressive enough, being too tentative, and not executing in the right way, that's what led to our offensive struggles and they were able to score."

On Baylor's aggressiveness...
"I told the guys that Baylor came into this game 0-2 in the league, so they're going to play with a level of fight and a level of aggressiveness, and we could match and exceed that to where it could work against them, and I thought at times we did that, but it was nowhere near consistently enough. In the end of the first half and the start of the second half, we weren't aggressive enough or smart enough."

On what Baylor did in the second half to slow down Febres...
"They did a good job adjusting and accounting for him. He got one open look but he wasn't able to knock it down. They were just way more aware. Honestly, they played a lot more man-to-man. When we played Baylor, like they do against most teams, they switch defenses back and forth from man to zone. We did a better job against their zone today than we did against their man-to-man."

Freshman Mohamed Bamba
On what happened in the last 5 minutes...
"We just came out and got uptight. We didn't execute at the level we're capable of executing on the offensive end. We got the stops, and we were hoping that those would lead to momentum to get a good shot, but it just didn't, so we just have to execute better."

On Baylor picking up intensity at halftime...
"I think we matched their physicality pretty well, but they made tougher plays down the stretch than we did. They got the 50/50 balls more than we did, and those are things we just have to learn from."

Freshman Jase Febres
On what Baylor did defensively in the second half...
"Honestly, I just didn't feel like I was getting to the open spot. They didn't do anything that was crazy or anything that was taking me out of my game. I was trying to get looks in for my big men. We just have to play tougher. I think that's the reason why we didn't win."

On extra energy from this being first startÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬ ¦
"Yeah, of course. It's always been a dream for me to start and come play in big games. Andrew, of course, is sick, so I knew I needed to step in and bring to the team what I needed to do, but honestly, it doesn't really matter because we didn't get the win, so I'm not satisfied with anything."
