THE RUNDOWN
AMES, Iowa – Baylor cross country took eighth (men) and ninth (women) in the 2018 Big 12 Cross Country Championships Friday morning at the ISU Cross Country Course.
The result wasn't what we wanted obviously, but there really were some positives," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "The positives just weren't up as high as we needed them to be. Six girls PRd today. It just wasn't as far up as we needed those PRs to be."
Brooke Gilmore led the women's team with a 36th-place finish, running a 6,000-meter time of 21:35.7. Alison Andrews-Paul (46th), Celia Holmes (65th), Hana Marsheck (68th) and Haley Everroad (69th) also scored for the Bears. Andrews-Paul, Holmes, Marsheck, and Everroad all recorded PRs along with Katy Parsons and Lindsay Walton.
"We're missing some key pieces, and we're missing them at practice as well as the meet," Capron said. "We weren't that far off, but some of us were and when that happens, you don't get the results you want."
On the men's side, Connor Laktasic led the way with an 8,000-meter time of 25:29.3, good for a 34th-place finish. TJ Sugg was right behind in 35th (25:29.8), while Matt Henderson (55th), Henry Huff (56th), and Ryan Day (58th) completed the scoring for Baylor.
"Missing Jeremy (Meadows) was a little tough and not having Cal (Johnston), he was kind of poised to do something good today," Capron said. "We're definitely bummed to have those guys missing, but my guys put up a heck of a fight. Ryan Day did an awesome job kind of subbing in for Cal. Fellow Midway boy. That was a great thing. Connor ran excellent, and TJ was good kind of tracking him."
Next up for the Bears is the NCAA South Central Regional Championships Nov. 9 in College Station, Texas.
"I think that course will be pretty approachable for us," Capron said. "Some of us know it already. Some of the other girls will be pretty comfortable down there. I think we'll run well at regionals.
"On the guys side at regionals, they ran that course already," Capron added. "They learned some lessons on that course and who they need to be running with. If they take the lessons they learned from the last race down there, they'll be able to be a lot more competitive this time."

STAT OF THE MEET
6- PR times on the Baylor women's team
TOP QUOTE
"On the ladies' side, I'm not losing anybody off that team. And I'm going to have some really good pieces going forward in the next year. I'm probably more confident than I should be for the future. Regionals we're going to have to get in there and battle some more. But after that, there's nothing but good things to look forward to from this team." – associate head coach Jon Capron
