Bears win opening set in four-set defeat Saturday afternoon
THE RUNDOWN
LAWRENCE, Kan. – 23rd-ranked Baylor volleyball (10-6, 2-3 Big 12) had double-double performances from Aniah Philo and Gia Milana but ultimately dropped a four-set decision to Kansas (11-4, 4-0 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at Horejsi Family Athletics Center, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21.
Playing in a new lineup, Milana (season-high 17 kills, 12 digs) and Philo (13 kills, 12 digs) led the team on the outside while Shelly Fanning contributed 10 kills in the middle. Defensively, the Bears had its best blocking performance since Sept. 14 with 13 team blocks.
Tara Wulf fueled an early 5-0 run and helped Baylor claim a 6-1 lead in set one. The Bears hit a match-high .282 and secured a tight 25-23 set win to go up 1-0 in the match.
Baylor struggled offensively in set two, but two BU kills and a KU attack error made it a one-point set before Kansas ran away with the 25-18 win.
BU and Kansas battled in set three with seven tie scores and three lead changes, but a 7-0 Jayhawk run had Baylor drop the frame, 25-23.
Baylor fell down early in set four, but a late rally erased three match points forced the KU timeout. BU couldn't keep the rally going and dropped the final set, 25-21.

• The Bears started Gia Milana, Aniah Philo, Ashley Fritcher, Hannah Lockin, Shelly Fanning, Nicole Thomas and libero Shanel Bramschreiber for the first time this season.
