WACO, Texas – With offense at a premium again in game two of the Green and Gold World Series, the Gold team found a way to pull out a 2-1 win over the Green team on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark to even the series at 1-1.
Gold got on the board first, manufacturing a run in the top of the second inning. Junior infielder Davis Wendzel worked a leadoff walk and later scored on a potential inning-ending double play ball that redshirt freshman Kyle Harper beat out.
Green saw its run come in the bottom of the fourth inning as sophomore shortstop Nick Loftin drove in senior outfielder Cole Haring with a sacrifice fly. After freshman infielder Ricky Martinez's double gave Green runners on second and third, Gold turned to freshman right-hander Branson Wilson, who escaped the jam by forcing a groundout and racking up his only strikeout of his outing. Wilson retired all five batters he faced in 1.2 innings of work.
Freshman first baseman Brooks Helmer began the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to give Gold a 2-1 edge, a lead that held through the conclusion of the seven-inning game.
Redshirt sophomore Daniel Caruso pitched a scoreless inning to close things out for Gold and send the series to Game Three all square at one win apiece.
The Bears will return to Baylor Ballpark for Game Three on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. before finishing up the series on Friday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2:30 p.m. All games are free and open to the public.
