BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"The first six minutes of the second half and the first half looked a lot like the first game, and the last fourteen minutes looked a lot like what we've seen in practice. It was exciting to see us play like what we've seen our team compete and play in practice, the last 14 minutes. Hopefully we can keep on building off of that and keep that carrying on."
On what he said at half time about defensive intensity:
"Really profound just, don't turn it over. But, that's one thing we feel that our turnover numbers can be lower this year. We feel like we're a pretty good ball handling team. I think taking care of the ball, that saves you some transition buckets, first and foremost. Second thing is, especially early in the year when no one's half-court offense is that good and especially when you have a bunch of new guys, it even takes longer. You have to score in transition, and that means you have to get stops. For us in the first half, we got stops but we didn't get out and run as much. Second half, we got stops and were able to get out and run more and we made some shots which helped as well. When you hit a couple of threes, that loosens up things and those three threes in a row really gave us a boost."
On Devonte's performance:
"He is somebody that we recruited because he is fundamentally sound and does a really good job of making the right play. He is someone that can shoot and shoot at a high level, so that's why we try to make a big conscious effort to bring in guys that can shoot. As we feel more and more comfortable and run the offense more and more, hopefully the guys reflect that."
On free throw percentage compared to last game:
"A lot better than 3-11, yeah! We'll have to work on the lane violations but at least we're getting better with, again in the scrimmages, we were a good three-point shooting team and put some fans out there. We had some nerves and we weren't very good, so I think over time you get more what you see in practice and what you do in a game and hopefully we can get to that level."
On shutting down Southern's guards in the lane:
"(Eddie) Reece is a really good player and he did a lot of that, and he is very quick, very athletic. I thought the biggest thing- giving up zero assists and 7 turnovers- that's the best thing we did. Other than that, he's a good player."
On lineup size changes from Tuesday:
"This is one of those years when you have so many new guys, especially with two guys still not playing. You love as a coach to go in and know your rotation, know your starting lineup. We feel we have more sense of our identity with Mario (Kegler) and with Makai (Mason), and without them we are still searching. Hopefully we can get Makai back sooner rather than later."
Baylor Junior Devonte Bandoo
On the difference in the second half:
"I think the biggest difference we had in the second half is just we built more energy, the more intense we walked in. Our coach talked to us on going into the second half, got us real fired up and focused on the little things. I think that's what really helped us the last fourteen minutes in the second half to get that lead."
On the energy in the second half:
"I think it was just getting stops first. And I think once we get stops and you see one person get going, it just translates to everyone else. When one person hits a shot- JD hit a shot, Darius hit another shot- it just got everybody going. That's how we got that lead and that's it."
Baylor Sophomore Tristan Clark
On Southern's smaller front:
"They were smaller so I used my size as my advantage, obviously. I tried to get easy buckets and if they collapsed I could get easy shots, I could create easy shots for my teammates. So, the goal was to get inside and create from there."
On foul trouble:
"I'm not trying to foul on purpose but I'm watching film on it, I'm trying to get better at it as quick as possible. I don't like fouling out, I don't like getting cheap calls, so I'm just learning from it. I'm studying, I'm playing. Everybody in here is still learning, so I'm just going to watch the film and learn from it."
SOUTHERN POSTGAME QUOTES
Southern Head Coach Sean Woods
On what changed in the latter second half:
"We are still trying to change the culture, you know, being able to sustain. These guys just can't sustain yet and as you saw, turnover after turnover, unforced turnover, not getting back- discipline. Those are things that I have to change. You know, it's going to take a minute to do so. Change whole habits, whole mentalities and things like that. Especially when the guys that play a lot of minutes are seniors who did underachieve a lot last year. So just have to continue to get them to be better and get to finish games. I thought we had a chance to win the game if we just stayed the course, and we didn't stay the course."
On turnovers causing the loss:
"No doubt about it. That just comes back to character and things like that, which that's why I'm here. To try to change that."
On key players with rough stats:
"That's the story of the game, as simple as that."
On hopes of learned experiences on the road:
"Just continue to compete, to sustain, and I'm very disappointed today because I thought it was a very winnable game. As you saw, we weren't doing anything spectacular but the things we do, we should have had a chance to win the game coming down the stretch. We lost our mind there for about three or four minutes, and the game got out of hand and there's no way we can come back."
On what he got out of his bigs:
"That's what I'm working on too, especially from a rebounding standpoint. But also, we have to get the ball in there when they have guys on their back, and we didn't do that. We kind of looked them off a little bit, and that's something that we have to continue to get better at also."
