WACO, Texas – The unlikeliest of factors decided this year's Green and Gold World Series as Team Gold was named champions via a coin flip after playing to a 4-4 stalemate with Team Green in Game Four at Baylor Ballpark.
Green jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as redshirt sophomore Hunter Seay singled home sophomore Nick Loftin and redshirt freshman Chase Wehsener drove in a pair of runs with a single of his own.
Gold answered right back in the bottom half thanks to junior Shea Langeliers' RBI single that scored senior outfielder Richard Cunningham. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bertelsman also came around to score on the play thanks to a throwing error and the lead was trimmed to 3-2.
In the bottom of the third inning, junior Davis Wendzel led things off with a double and later scored on another Langeliers single that tied things at 3-3.
Freshman right-hander Anderson Needham turned in a quality start for Green and collected six strikeouts in four innings of work. Another freshman righty impressed on the bump as Gold's Ryan Segner retired nine in a row with the game tied.
Extra innings were necessary as the two sides were deadlocked 3-3 after the seventh. To start the eighth, a runner was placed on second base. Green made use of a Gold throwing error to score freshman Ricky Martinez in the top of the inning, but Gold evened it up thanks to an RBI knock by senior Cole Weaver.
In search of a winner, the bases were loaded to start the ninth, but neither team found a way to score. Gold's Daniel Caruso tight roped out of danger and Green's Blake Helton escaped the jam. The same was true in the 10thas Gold's Branson Wilson retired the side and left the bases loaded, and Helton did the same for Green.
Baylor head coach Steve Rodriguez decided to turn to a coin flip in order to decide the winner. Green's manager Andy Thomas called heads in the air, but the coin landed on tails and Gold was crowned victorious. The win clinched a 3-1 series win for the Gold team.
The Bears are now finished with fall practice and will pick back up in January before opening the 2019 season on Feb. 15 vs. Holy Cross at Baylor Ballpark.
