BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"Well, not the start we wanted to the season. We came in knowing that we were the fourth-fewest returning lettermen team in the nation and we played like it tonight. Thought foul trouble really hurt us. We got the lead and then had the foul trouble and had to keep our somewhat experienced players in Mark (Vital) and Tristan (Clark) on the bench. That really hurt us in the second half when they were able to keep their starters in. I thought they made the big plays down the stretch with offensive rebounds, shooting 63 percent, and we played like first-game jitters. Probably in hindsight, a couple things I would have done different. Maybe would have had an exhibition game just to get their uniforms on because you had so many new guys. It was a different feel in the scrimmages and we played much better then. Obviously, we had different personnel in the scrimmages and that affected things a lot as well with Mario (Kegler) and Makai (Mason)."
On extending the lead with a four-guard lineup…
"I think they had foul trouble too, so they took their starters out. They have six seniors and when it's freshman-on-freshman we're good. When it was 18-on-23 we weren't as successful."
On defending Jaylyn Patterson…
"He hadn't played in the scrimmages. That was the first time he played. He obviously was the difference in the game. Fifth-year guy from LSU, he's been in these situations before. He was the one guy we couldn't lose. He's the one guy you couldn't give up the shots to and they got the offensive rebounds, they got him the ball and he got the shots."
On the leadership of King McClure…
"What's great is when you get Mario (Kegler) and Makai (Mason), you get him some more help out there. I thought he did an unbelievable job trying to lead and communicate, but he's got to have more help out there. It really hurt when Tristan (Clark) and Mark (Vital) were in foul trouble because those are the other two guys that have experience. When they weren't in the game, it made it tough on King."
Baylor Senior King McClure
On what happened down the stretch…
"I feel like at times tonight we showed our immaturity. Credit to Texas Southern, they played hard. It seemed like they wanted the game more than us, in a sense. Credit to their coaches, they were prepared, they hit big shots, everything that really could have went wrong, went wrong. They're a good team, make the tournament every year, so just credit to them."
On playing with four guards with guys in foul trouble…
"We just played hard, played together, made plays, got stops, rebounded. I feel like we missed rebounds toward the end of the game, myself personally I didn't box out a few times, I could have done it a little bit more. I feel like as a team that we played hard in that span when Tristan (Clark) was out in that first half. We just played together. It was like two different teams out there, first half and second half."
On being a leader and stepping up in critical moments…
"I just really want to win. I don't really care about scoring, I don't really care about being that guy. I just want to win. At the end of the day, whatever I need to do in order for us to win is what I'll do. If I've got to go score 20, I'll do that. If I score five and we get a W, then I'm cool with that. That's just how I am. Tonight I felt like I had to score in order for us to win, but we've got so many guys on this team that can score and that can play."
Baylor Junior Devonte Bandoo
On his first game at Baylor…
"It was a great experience. It was a great atmosphere. We're still young, we're still learning. Little stuff that we still have to work on. I know toward the end of the season, we're going to get better. You can't really judge a team by the start of the season. It's towards the end. I know we're going to keep grinding, getting better, but for my first game it was pretty exciting."
On what happened down the stretch…
"It was tough, but it's a game of runs. Players do get hot, but it's up to us to deal with that and adjust. Today, we didn't do too well. I know that's something Coach Drew will have us work on to get better."
TEXAS SOUTHERN POSTGAME QUOTES
Texas Southern Head Coach Johnny Jones
Opening Statement…
"We knew coming in this was going to be an extremely hard test for us against a quality team like Baylor on the road on their floor. Certainly there is a lot of success and tradition of this program, and Coach Drew has done a great job here. We knew we didn't play a good first half of basketball, but it was important for us to settle in and just fight in the second half and make some improvements. We tried to win the four-minute intervals and we were able to keep battling and fighting in order to come out with a huge victory to start the season."
On this win for the program…
"There was a lot of turnover in the offseason, but Jaylyn (Patterson) played very well, and we know the capable player that he is. I think the buy-in that the guys have had since day one and our practice and the energy we've had in those practices has helped and it is exciting for them to be rewarded."
On Baylor being 56 and 0 against SWAC teams before tonight…
"I did not know that history. I knew about the Michigan State win a few years ago but I did not bring that up to the guys because they were not a part of the success. I'm hoping that people will give us some credit for this one though because this is a big one for our program."
Texas Southern Graduate Senior Jaylyn Patterson
On being down by 17 in the second half…
"We just kept fighting. We knew there was going to be some adversity and everyone in the house was against us, but we just played hard."
On the shot to take the lead…
"I shoot every day so I just keep shooting and knock it down. I like any open look so all I do is keep shooting."
