WACO, Texas – Alison Andrews-Paul ran a career-best 5K time of 18:08.7 to claim the top spot and lead the Baylor women's cross country team to victory Friday morning at the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational at Lynn Creek Park in Arlington.
"We held (Andrews-Paul) back a little bit again but told the whole pack to move a little bit as a group to push the front for the first mile," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "We packed up really nice the first mile and used that as a launching point, and Alison was able to move the last two miles and really did a good job. The rest of the pack stayed together, which was a great byproduct of the first mile, and Alison was able to move from that. She's in really good shape right now, and it's kind of showing out in her efforts."
The junior from Masterton, New Zealand, led a group of 10 Baylor women in the top 10, giving the Bears (15 points) a dominating 35-point victory over UTA (50 points) in the 5,000-meter race. Brooke Gilmore (18:47.4), Gabby Satterlee (18:47.6), Sarah Antrich (18:48.1), and Celia Holmes (19:01.3) completed the scoring for Baylor.
"I'm really proud of the way they ran together," Capron said. "Some of the middle girls made sure they were ahead of their middle girls. Our middle pack ran pretty well today, and them packing up really helped that happen."
On the men's side, Jeremy Meadows once again led the Bears, placing third with a 5K time of 15:38.4. Connor Laktasic finished fifth (15:57.2), TJ Sugg placed sixth (16:02.5), Matt Henderson finished ninth (16:12.4), and Cal Johnston rounded out the Baylor scoring with an 11th-place finish (16:14.7). The Bears totaled 29 points to place second, just behind UTA's tally of 26.
"That ended up being kind of fun," Capron said. "The guys got into a pretty good little race. Jeremy had all he could handle with some of those older guys that are pretty good 5K guys. For him to be in the mix was pretty good. The rest of the guys ran pretty well too. I was really pleased with their movement during the race, and they were able to close hard. TJ ran a good second half. Connor got stuck in a gap a little bit but did well to hold his spot through the course of the race. They beat us by a couple, but I'm real proud of where my guys are right now."
Baylor now has a three-week break from competition until the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Sept. 28 at Burke Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.
"We're doing really well at the speeds we've worked on, but we need to start tightening that up and getting a little faster in everything we're doing," Capron said. "We're going to have to dial it up a little bit. That's the plan with the next couple weeks of training, both training really hard and resting up as well."
HIGHLIGHTS
15 – The Baylor women's team's perfect score after holding the top five spots in the race

"We've been kind of grinding it out lately. Two races in two weeks is kind of a big ask sometimes, especially amongst all the work we've been doing. I'm excited to get a couple more workouts under our belt, work on that speed a little bit and start resting up too for some of these bigger meets." – Associate Head Coach Jon Capron
