Cole Hardan set a new school record in the weight throw.
LUBBOCK, Texas – A school record, national marks, and personal bests highlighted a successful first day for Baylor track & field Friday at the Texas Tech Classic.
"We had an overall outstanding first day," head coach Todd Harbour said. "You couldn't have really asked for any better. There are always a few things that don't go your way, but I thought overall this was about as good a first day as we've had. Hopefully we can continue to build on it tomorrow."
Cole Hardan, a freshman from Valley Center, Calif., broke Chris Cardwell's 13-year-old school record in the weight throw with a throw of 56-11.5 (17.36m) to take first place in the weight throw B section. Cardwell set the former record mark at 55-2 in Fayetteville, Ark, during the 2006 indoor season.
"We had a big school record by Cole," Harbour said. "That's huge for him as a freshman."

Senior Wil London made his season debut in the 400 meters, and he did not disappoint. The Waco, Texas, product clocked a national-leading time of 45.73 (adjusted to 45.84 for national rankings) while moving to the No. 3 all-time indoor perfomer spot in Baylor history. Only Jeremy Wariner and Brandon Couts have run faster than London's No. 5-best time in school history. Sophomore Trey Fields finished fourth in the race, putting him at No. 10 in the country with an adjusted national time of 46.85.
Kiana Horton also made her 2019 debut in the 400, and she put up the No. 2 time in the nation this season (52.56, 52.67 adjusted) to take second only behind the national leader. The senior from San Antonio, Texas, was just .01 off her PR with the fourth-best time in school history.
Sophomores Kennedy Bailey and Sydney Washington continued their solid starts to the season, lowering their PRs in the 60-meter hurdles and 60 meters, respectively.
Washington took fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.39 after running a personal-best 7.33 in the semifinals, while Bailey took sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.32) following a PR of 8.30 in the prelims.
"We had some big PBs across the board," Harbour said. "The two quarters, Kiana and Wil, those were outstanding. Both first quarters of the year for those two, moved them up really high on our performance list and national's. Kennedy and Sydney in the 60mh and 60m, those were outstanding."
Leti De Souza made her return to the track and won the women's 600 meters with a time of 1.33.59, followed by teammates Amanda Dillon and Venae Jessurun in second and third.
The women's DMR of Kayla Windemuller, Jhane' King, Katy Parsons and Celia Holmes took third place with a time of 12:07.11.
Alex Madlock took fifth with a mark of 42-1.5 (12.84m) in her first triple jump competition of the year, and Reese Sarnowski set a personal best (16-0, 4.88m) to take second in the men's pole valut B section.
"Reese got him a nice PB in the pole vault," Harbour said. "Alex opened up big. That's her best opener in the triple. Very solid day for her. Our DMR on the ladies' side was good. Kayla hadn't run, that was her first collegiate race. She did a great job, and so did Leti (in the 600) in her first race of the year."
