WACO, Texas– Junior left-handed pitcher Cody Bradford headlined four Bears earning Preseason All-Big 12 honors, as he was named Preseason Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, it was announced today by the conference office.
Bradford, the Big 12's reigning Pitcher of the Year, is picked to repeat the honor by a vote of the conference coaches. He is joined on the Big 12 Preseason All-Conference team by catcher Shea Langeliers and infielders Davis Wendzel and Nick Loftin. The Bears' four selections are second most in the conference behind Texas Tech's five.
In 2018, Bradford became the first Bear to be named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year after an outstanding sophomore campaign. The lefty, who also earned Third Team All-America honors in 2018, was 7-6 with a 2.51 ERA over 96.2 innings of work. In Big 12 play he was even more impressive, boasting a 1.88 ERA in 52.2 IP, going 4-3 with 2 complete games and 49 strikeouts to just 13 walks. Bradford has been named a Preseason All-American by three different outlets so far in 2019.
Langeliers was one of only two honorees to be unanimous Preseason All-Conference selections (Josh Jung of Texas Tech was the other selection). A 2018 Gold Glove award winner and 2018 Second Team All-American, Langeliers is a two-year starter behind the plate for the Bears. Last season he set career high marks with 49 runs, 18 doubles, 11 home runs, 44 RBI, 35 walks and an impressive .994 fielding percentage. His walk-off RBI single clinched Baylor's first-ever Big 12 Tournament championship and he was named Co-MOP of the Big 12 Tournament with teammate Cody Bradford. He has earned four preseason All-America selections so far for 2019.
Wendzel, a First Team All-Big 12 selection in 2018, batted an impressive .310 with 8 home runs, 22 doubles and a team-high 49 RBIs in 2018. The San Clemente, Calif., native, was a 2018 All-Big 12 Tournament honoree, and finished 18thnationally and third in the Big 12 with 22 doubles on the year and set career-high marks in batting average, runs, hits, doubles and RBIs in 2018. He reached base in 37 consecutive games in 2018, Baylor's longest streak since 2003.
Loftin is coming off an outstanding freshman campaign in 2018 where he earned Freshman All-America honors for his play at shortstop. He started 53 of 55 games and batted .306 with 36 RBIs and six home runs.
The Bears open up the 2019 season on Friday, Feb. 15 as they host Holy Cross in a four-game set.
