Bears defeat Oklahoma State, fall to Kansas to sit 1-1 in pool play
HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men's golf split a pair of pool play matches during Friday's first day of competition at the 2019 Big 12 Match Play Championship at Golf Club at Houston Oaks.
The Bears won 3-1-2 in the morning match against Oklahoma State before falling 4-2 in the afternoon against Kansas. Baylor is tied with Kansas State for second place in Pool B with 3 points each, while Kansas leads with 6 points. Oklahoma State played only one match and did not earn any points, while Oklahoma also has zero points after dropping both of Friday's matches.
Baylor is still in contention to advance to Sunday afternoon's championship match, but the Bears will need to win their two remaining matches and will need help from another team in Pool B against Kansas. BU faces Kansas State at 1:30 p.m. CT Saturday and Oklahoma at 8 a.m. Sunday. Championship round matches against teams from Pool A are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
After a 70-minute weather delay, teams got started in Friday's first matchup at 9:10 a.m. Baylor raced out to a lead against Oklahoma State, with freshman Johnny Keefer putting the first point on the board with a 7&6 win over Ferdinand Muller. Colin Kober earned Baylor's second point with a 4&3 victory over Brian Stark, and Cooper Dossey got the Bears closer to victory by winning the final hole to halve his match against Austin Eckroat.
With Mark Reppe and Travis McInroe still on the course, the Bears needed a win from either or a halve from both. McInroe won three consecutive holes to go 3-up with three remaining against Rayhan Thomas, while Reppe battled back from 2-down with four to go to get all-square with two remaining.
McInroe clinched the Baylor victory by winning his 17th hole to take a 2&1 win in his match, and Reppe halved the final two holes to split his match against Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. Freshman Tyler Isenhart lost 5&3 in his match against OSU's Aman Gupta, but the Bears took a 3-1-2 victory to improve to 6-0 in Big 12 Match Play.
BU suffered its first loss in the two-year old event on Friday afternoon, dropping four close matches in a 4-2 defeat against Kansas. Keefer rolled to a 5&3 win over Kansas' Drew Shepherd, and Kober dominated his match with a 6&5 victory over Jeff Doty, but the Bears wouldn't earn another point.
McInroe fell to Ben Sigel, 2-up, and Reppe lost his match against Harry Hillier 2&1. Brandon Hoff, who was subbed into the lineup between matches, fell 2&1 against Luke Kluver, and Dossey dropped his match 1-up against Andy Spencer.
