Lady Bears second only to UConn in active AP weekly poll streak
WACO, Texas – The Baylor women's basketball program's streak in the Associated Press Top 25 poll reached 300 weeks with the Lady Bears debuting in the preseason poll at No. 2 Wednesday.
Baylor's streak began in the 2004 season, and the Lady Bears are second only to UConn's streak, which reached 490 straight weeks. The Huskies begin the 2019-20 season ranked fifth.
Despite winning a national title April 7, Baylor will start the season ranked behind Oregon. Baylor ended Oregon's season in the national semifinals April 5. The Lady Bears received three first-place votes while the Ducks took 25 of the 28 votes.
The Lady Bears return All-American Lauren Cox, who has earned five All-America selections in her career and was a unanimous preseason first-team All-American by Athlon Sports, Lindy's Sports and Street & Smith's. Cox, the reigning two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and the 2019-20 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, averaged 13.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 3.9 assists last season.
Cox was also a preseason selection to the Katrina McClain Award for power forwards, which is organized by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the WBCA as a part of the "Starting Five" awards delivered each spring. Four of Cox's teammates filled out the other "Starting Five" preseason watch lists with Te'a Cooper (Liberman, PG), Juicy Landrum (Drysdale, SG), DiDi Richards (Miller, SF) and Queen Egbo (Leslie, C). NaLyssa Smith also returns after a solid freshman season, and she was named Preseason All-Big 12 along with Cox, Cooper, Landrum and Richards.
