No. 8 EQ Secures 12-3 Victory over Delaware State

Bears open the Willis Invitational with nine-point victory over DSU, lead by six over UC Davis
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 8 Baylor equestrian (1-1) kicked off the Willis Invitational with a dominant 12-3 win over Delaware State (0-1) Friday morning at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
The meet started out with fences, where the Bears pocketed a 3-1 win in the discipline. Points from Rachael Davis and Dominika Silvestri put BU on the scoreboard, while Maddie Vorhies secured the victory with a meet-high 85 on Petey.
In reining, the Bears once again came out on top. Madeline Bomba, Madaline Callaway and Carly Salter each contributed points, bringing the overall score to 6-2 at the half.
The meet continued with flat and horsemanship. In the flat, Madison Day, Grace Thiel, Rachael Davis and Caroline Fuller each locked down points for the Bears, shutting out the Hornets 4-0.
In horsemanship, Clara Johnson's 73.5 on Zeke and Liana Caroccio's 72.5 aboard Sweetie kept the Bears on top, fending off DSU 2-1 and bringing the total score to a 12-3 win.
Following an intermission, BU turned its eyes to the first half of play against UC Davis (0-0). The Bears held the Aggies scoreless in the flat, with Grace Thiel, Rachael Davis, Caroline Weaver and Caroline Fuller each winning their individual matchups.
In the reining, BU continued the 3-1 trend, with points contributed by Maggie Cincotta, Carly Salter, and Madaline Callaway bringing the score to 7-1 at the end of the first half.
The Bears and the Aggies will pick back up Saturday at 10 a.m. with the fences and horsemanship portions of the competition.

"Coming off the SMU meet, this gave us the opportunity to come back home to defend our home arena and feel comfortable on our own horses. Those were the things we talked about this week and I think for the most part we did a really good job of that. I don't think we're as good as we need to be. We still made some small mistakes and let some mental things get in our way and I still think we've got a long way to go, but that's probably where we should be at this point in the season."
