The Bears add two freshmen from Leon, Spain and Taipei, Taiwan for spring season
WACO, Texas – Baylor Director of Tennis and Head Men's Tennis Coach Brian Boland announced the addition of freshmen Alejandro Garcia and Joseph Chen to the 2020 spring roster on Thursday.
Both newcomers will join the team in January.

Alejandro "Alex" Garcia comes to Baylor from León, Spain and graduated from IES López de Mendoza. Most recently winning the ITF J1 Villena Spain U18 doubles championship, he also won Spanish Championships in the U12, U16 and U18 divisions in doubles and was a singles finalist in U15 and U18 divisions.
"We are excited for Alex to join the Baylor tennis family," Boland said. "Alex has a passion and commitment to the sport that is going to allow him to maximize his potential. He possesses a big serve and he plays an aggressive style of tennis. With the continued opportunity to develop, Alex is going to have a big impact on our program."
Standing at 6-foot-2 and with a UTR of 13.60, he has an ITF juniors career-high ranking of No. 117 and an ATP singles ranking of No. 1141.

Kuan Yu "Joseph" Chen joins the Bears from Taipei, Taiwan. Coming from National Nanke Experimental High School, he finished third at the OPI Cup Nationals in U18 division and won the singles championship at the Tainan City Boys High School division.
"Joseph's passion for our university and tennis program was clear in the recruiting process, and that's what we are looking for in our players," Boland said. "His love of the game and desire to be at Baylor will have an immediate impact on everyone in our program. His size and athleticism paired with his upside make him a great addition to the team."
Chen was a doubles semifinalist at the BNP Paribas Open Junior de Nouvelle-Caledonie.
Garcia and Chen enter a BU program that has won 13 Big 12 Conference regular season titles and nine tournament crowns over the 23-year history of the league. They join four returning letterwinners and newcomers Finn Bass, Ryan Dickerson, Christopher Frantzen and Jenson Brooksby for the 2019-20 season.
BU opens the spring schedule with a doubleheader against Boise State and UT Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The matches are slated for 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. starts, respectively.
