Saying it was "time for me to come back," former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III will return to his Baylor roots to host a quarterback camp this summer.
Baylor's RGIII Quarterback Academy will be held June 15 and is open to football players entering grades 9-12 next year. The one-day camp will be led by RGIII, who has had stints with the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens in his NFL career after winning the 2011 Heisman Trophy and leading the Bears to a 10-win season.
"Essentially, it is a quarterback passing academy for all level of athletes," Griffin said in a recent interview with ESPN Central Texas radio station. "We're going to have some great quarterback coaches come out, work with them. We're going to do some combine testing and some drills."
In addition to the drills and testing on the field, the campers will also go through classroom sessions led by Griffin, who signed a two-year contract with the Ravens last month after helping mentor rookie QB Lamar Jackson last year.
"It's really just an opportunity for me to give back, along with some of my former teammates and the Baylor staff and current players, to give back to the community, give back to these young players who are going to be the stars of tomorrow," he said. "And just give them the tools. They don't need too much, but we're going to give them enough where they continue to hone their game and just get better at playing the game at a high level."
Cost for the camp is $100, with registration available at https://baylorbears.com/feature/qbacademy.
Baylor head coach Matt Rhule, who reached out to RGIII when he got the job in December 2016, said bringing Griffin back on campus for the camp is a way to "unite all these eras of Baylor football, bringing him home and having him work with the young people who want to come to our camp."
"I think it's going to be an elite camp," Rhule said. "We had over 2,000 kids come to our camps last year. Now, we're just going to add to that with an all-day quarterback camp. We'd like to get some of the other Baylor quarterbacks involved, coach, teach, recruit. I think it's a wonderful opportunity for us to reach out to quarterbacks all across the country, put together a great product and, most importantly, just unite Baylor football."
A consensus All-American who also won the Davey O'Brien and Manning awards in 2011, Griffin passed for a school-record 10,071 yards and 78 touchdowns and added 2,199 yards and 32 TDs rushing his four-year career with the Bears (2008-11).
The No. 2 pick overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, RGIII had back-to-back 3,000-yard passing seasons with the Redskins in 2012-13, leading the Redskins to the playoffs and earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, but has played in just 17 games total over the last five years.
Signing him to the new two-year contract, Baltimore gave Griffin the chance to "go out and prove any doubters wrong and continue to show I have what it takes to lead a franchise at this level."
"Right now, that's not my situation in Baltimore," he said. "But, I'm going to help Lamar Jackson become the best player he can and help this team win as many games as we can, in whatever capacity they ask me to do that."
Griffin said Rhule, who led the Bears to a 7-6 season and bowl game victory last year, has done a "phenomenal job of helping Baylor get back on the right track. We're not back where we want to be yet, but to where we started the process and we're getting back."
"I tip my hat to Coach Rhule, not only for what he's done with the team, but just how he's handed some of the alumni and giving us the opportunity to come back and be a part," he said. "I'm trying to make sure I re-insert myself into the university and into the community at Baylor so that that healing process can continue. They've done a great job of starting it, and now I just want to continue that healing process."
