Due to travel delays by the visiting Arkansas Razorbacks, Thursday's game at Betty Lou Mays Field was pushed back two hours and 15 minutes past the scheduled start time and could have been pushing midnight if the scoreless deadlock had gone into overtime periods.
Instead, the Razorbacks (5-1-1) got on the board with a "scrum" goal by Steffani Doyle with just 7:03 left in regulation and tacked on a late score by freshman forward Anna Podogil for a 2-0 victory that ended Baylor's national-best 15-game home-field winning streak.
"(For) college kids, 9 o'clock is not late," said Baylor coach Paul Jobson, whose team fell to 3-2-1 with its first home loss since falling 1-0 in overtime to Texas on Oct. 20, 2017. "I don't think our first half was great, it was OK. I didn't think it had anything to do with the delay. I just think that we weren't probably as ready to compete as we needed to be."
That showed in a first half when the Bears were outshot, 13-4, by a hot Arkansas team that has outscored its opponents, 21-0, over the last four games.
"They were spirited, they were ready for the most part, and it was OK. It just wasn't quite good enough," Jobson said of the first half. "I think the second half was a lot better, I thought we played a lot better. We gave up our two goals in that half, but I thought we had more chances, I thought we played a little bit harder. So, I was happier with the second half."
Even without senior forward Camryn Wendlandt, who has scored three of the team's eight goals this season and assisted on two others, the Bears outshot Arkansas, 9-6, in the second half and threatened goalkeeper Katie Lund with six shots in the first 15 minutes.
Wendlandt was carted off the field in the first half and returned on crutches with an apparent ankle injury.
"It's precautionary at this point," Jobson said of Wendlandt's injury, "(but) hurt too bad to probably get back out there. We'll get a better scan on it (Friday)."
Senior forward Raegan Padgett had a couple good opportunities, rifling a kick from about 30 yards that forced Lund to go down to the ground to stop it and then sailed one over from right in front of the goal.
"It's frustrating, because I think we had some decent opportunities in the second half, in front of their goal to score," Jobson said. "Fractions of an inch, it goes our way maybe a different time. Those are things you hope go your way in a home match, and they didn't for us tonight."
After having an early goal in the second half waved off by an offside call, Arkansas got on the board in the 83rdminute when Parker Goins won a one-on-one battle with defender Kayle Ables and passed into a "scrum" near the net that Doyle was able to slip by Baylor goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt for the game-winner.
"Honestly, I thought it was an own goal, but I was talking to the players and I don't think it was," Jobson said. "They had a long ball into the corner . . . Kayley probably did all she could over there (against Goins). She got a nice service in, and they scored on a scrum, basically."
Despite the struggles that saw the defense allow 19 shots for the game and a pair of goals, Jobson felt like the back line and Wandt "did a really good job."
"I think some of our breakdowns did include the back line, but they're going to feel the pressure on a team that counterattacks," he said. "We've got to track better probably through our midfield and back line a little bit, but all in all I thought our backs did pretty well."
On the second goal, with Baylor pushing numbers forward to try to get a matching score in the last few minutes, it left the defense even more vulnerable as Podogil capitalized on a failed clearing by the back line and shot one by Wandt in a one-on-one situation. The Baylor goalkeeper finished with a season-high seven saves.
"You're going to give up those opportunities late in the game like that if you're trying to chase a lead," Jobson said. "I'm not mad about that second goal. I think we needed to push for a goal ourselves, and you make yourself vulnerable in the back when you do that."
Baylor goes back on the road to face ACU (3-2-0) at 7 p.m. Sunday in Abilene. The Wildcats lost a pair of 2-0 games to the Bears last year in Waco, including the first round of the NCAA tournament.
"I'm glad we had a Thursday match instead of a Friday turnaround," Jobson said. "It gives us an extra day to recover, kind of get our heads back together. . . . They're a tough team, so we've got to pick our heads up and pick ourselves back up again to go compete."
Baylor returns home to host third-ranked USC (6-0-0) and Gonzaga (5-2-0) next weekend.
