Bears turn attention to regular season
RANCHO Mirage, Calif. – Baylor senior Angie Shakhraichuk swept through the USTA National Collegiate Tennis Classic singles bracket and had to defeat teammate Mel Krywoj to take the title Sunday, 6-2, 6-0.
Representatives from Baylor, USC, Wake Forest, Virginia and Arizona State played in the three-day event that saw Shakhraichuk go 4-0. Four victories improved her tournament record to 16-4 in her four-year career and 48 wins overall.
The Kiev, Ukraine native defeated Virginia's Camille Favero in two sets, beat Baylor's Alicia Herrero linan and three sets in the quarterfinals, and downed Wake Forest's Eliza Omirou in the semifinals in two sets.
The senior then defeated the newcomer, Krywoj, in two sets. Shakhraichuk became the third player this season to reach the singles finals in a tournament and the first to take home the crown. Kris Sorokolet reached the finals at the Raquet Club Invite in Midland Sept. 15 while Anastasia Kharitonova reached the championship match at the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invite, Nov. 4.
All in all at the USTA NCTC, Baylor players went 12-7 on the singles court and 0-3 in doubles.
"I am proud of the entire team and our coaching staff. The players came back from Christmas break with little practice time and competed hard this weekend," said Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano. "We are definitely excited for Melany [Krywoj] and Alicia [Herrero Linana] in the way they battled in their first collegiate event."
Krywoj and Herrero Linana got their first action in Baylor uniforms after serving a year-in residence with Baylor. Both players are juniors for the Bears this spring. Krywoj went 3-1 over the weekend while Herrero Linana got her first win in her debut Friday.
"Both players have been patient and worked hard this past year in preparation for this moment. Melany played with a lot of quality this weekend to make the finals of this prestigious tournament," said Scrivano. "This is great win for Angie [Shakhraichuk]. She battled through injury last season, which caused her to miss the majority of the year. She's mentally tough, coachable and has a lot of grit. She's worked hard off the court with her performance team to get healthy and get to this level. She's deserving of winning a title like this."
Baylor opens the 2020 spring season Friday vs. Georgia State at 6 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
