Bears pull away behind van der Mark’s strong third set
THE RUNDOWN
AMES, Iowa – No. 2 Baylor volleyball (8-1) picked up its eighth-consecutive victory by sweeping Iowa State (2-5) 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 Friday night at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
The Bears won the serve and pass battle, tallying five aces to ISU's three and out-digging the Cyclones 46-39, and benefitted from an eight-kill third set by redshirt junior Marieke van der Mark that put the match away.
BU got out to a slow start, edging in front of the Cyclones by two points behind a Lauren Harrison kill at 7-5 in the first set. Kara McGhee put one down to give the Bears some breathing room at 15-11 and a sneaky dump by Callie Williams put an end to an ISU run at 19-17. McGhee would also collect a pair of kills late in the set, part of her 4-for-4 opener, to give the Bears a 1-0 match lead.
In the second, the Bears struggled offensively, hitting just .154, but made use of five Cyclone service errors. Senior Yossiana Pressley recorded seven of her 11 kills in the set, including set point, and Williams added two more timely kills at 8-5 and 19-15 to keep momentum in Baylor's favor.
Van der Mark sparked the Bears in the third, going off for eight kills on nine swings. The Netherlands native had back-to-back smashes to open the set, and Williams found the floor once more with a dump at 6-3. More Iowa State errors gave the Bears a five-point advantage in the middle of the set, and van der Mark put down another two kills consecutively to make it 20-12. Bramschreiber even got in on the action, recording a kill of her own at 21-12 before two more van der Mark kills at 23-13 and 24-16. Pressley put the exclamation point on the match with a solo block that ended things, one of BU's seven total rejections.
For the sixth time this season, and third time on the road, Baylor swept its opponent. Five Bears tallied at least five kills, and four players recorded at least one ace.
