Hard-pressed to name a favorite after recording his 900th career victory Friday night, Baylor softball coach Glenn Moore couldn't pick just one.
"But I know we've been in environments that didn't give us a lot of chances to win," said Moore, referring to NCAA Super Regionals at Georgia and Arizona. "Those are pretty special whenever you beat the odds, but I just love to see the girls celebrate after a big win, especially those years when you're able to get to the big show and represent Baylor at the World Series."
Going into the Getterman Classic needing two more wins to get to 900, Moore took care of that in Friday's opening day of the tournament with the Lady Bears (5-2) knocking off Prairie View A&M, 7-4, and then blasting Grand Canyon, 10-2, in a run-rule victory.
Already Baylor's all-time wins leader for all sports with 761, Moore has a career record of 900-416 that includes 139 combined wins at LSU and William Carey College.
"I'm a blessed man," he said, "to be able to do what I want to do and being surrounded by so many people that make that happen. First the players and certainly the other coaches. I've got a coach on my staff (Britni Sneed Newman) that is the reason I've got 900, the early part of that, for sure. And then Coach (Mark) Lumley. They're loyal, hard workers. I'm just very, very blessed to be here at Baylor and to coach softball this long."
Sophomore Josie Bower, who hit her second career home run and drove in six runs over the two games, said it was "special to be part of a big legacy like that, and that's what we were playing for."
"A lot of us wanted to bring it home tonight, the 900th win, and that's what we were playing for today," Bower said.
Falling behind in both games, the Lady Bears overcame an early 1-0 deficit against Prairie View (1-6) with a five-run explosion in the bottom of the second inning. Bower had a two-run triple and Taylor Ellis capped it with a two-run double that made it 5-2.
The Lady Panthers rallied to close the gap to 5-4, scoring two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth off starter Sidney Holman-Mansell (1-1). But, Baylor answered with two in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple by Lou Gilbert and an RBI double by Bower.
Gilbert was 3-for-3 and Bower 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Baylor's 11-hit attack in the opening win over Prairie View.
"I feel like I'm seeing the ball a lot better," said Bower, who is hitting .625 for the season (5-for-8). "I've worked with Coach Lumley a lot to fine-tune my swing, and I feel like I'm finally getting that done."
In the last of four opening-day games, freshman pitcher Aliyah Pritchett (2-0) went the distance in the 10-2, five-inning win over Grand Canyon (2-6). She gave up two runs in the second, but scattered three hits over the last three frames and retired the last five batters in order.
"I definitely knew I was nervous in the beginning," Pritchett said. "But knowing I had my team behind me made me step it up for them."
Pritchett, who wasn't even born when Moore came to Baylor in 2000, said it was "amazing" to get Moore's 900th career win. "It really built us even more as a team and a family, and it was awesome."
Baylor broke through with a run in the third on a two-out, RBI triple by Nicky Dawson and had a seven-run fourth inning highlighted by Bowers' three-run homer.
"I just saw a ball and I knew I had to hit it really far, and that's what I did," Bower said. "I knew Aliyah was battling in the circle, and I just wanted to get her a little more cushion for sure."
The Lady Bears capped the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Maddison Kettler and Emily Hott and a double by Kyla Walker, who went 3-for-4 in raising her batting average to .400.
Baylor will finish the round-robin schedule with a matchup against Western Illinois (2-5) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the semifinals at 3 and 5:30 p.m. In Friday's other games, Western Illinois rallied late to beat Prairie View, 6-5, before falling to Grand Canyon, 4-2.
