MIAMI, Fla. – Daniel Castano has been called up to the Miami Marlins, the organization announced on Tuesday. This will be his first appearance on a Major League roster, and he can become the 44
th former Baylor player to compete in an MLB game.
The left-handed pitcher played at Baylor from 2014-16 and finished his career with a 13-15 record and a 3.91 ERA in 50 appearances and 37 starts with one complete game shutout. He allowed 128 runs on 260 hits with 89 walks and 147 strikeouts in 234.2 innings of work.
Castano was selected in the 19
th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2016 MLB Draft and was traded to Miami in Dec. 2017.
He finished 2019 with a 3.35 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Double-A affiliate for the Marlins. On Aug. 8, Castano tossed Jacksonville's first nine-inning complete game since 2014 when he allowed a run on five hits while walking none and fanning 13 in a 5-1 win over the Mississippi Braves.
Over four seasons in the minors, Castano is 27-24 with a 3.76 ERA. He's struck out 335 while only logging 76 walks in 393 innings.
The Marlins are 2-1 to start the shortened season. Miami is set to resume its season with a four-game series against the Orioles Tuesday night. The series was originally scheduled from July 27-28 in Miami and July 29-30 in Baltimore, but was postponed due to COVID-19.
