Bears earn 23 first-team, five second-team selections

IRVING, Texas – Baylor football placed 28 student-athletes on the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Team, as announced by the conference office Thursday morning.

Twenty-three first-team selections ties a program record, while an additional five second-team picks make BU's 28 total the second-most in school history.

Terrel Bernard and Zeke Brown both picked up their fourth-career first-team honors, while Gerry Bohanon, Jalen Pitre, Issac Power and Brayden Utley collected their third-career first-team selections. Jacoby Clarke, Tyler Henderson, Noah Rauschenberg, Thor Rodoni, Rob Saulin, Ben Sims and Griffin Speaks are each now two-time first-team picks. All other Bears on the first team earned their first-career honor.

Jackson Gleeson notched his first-career first-team honors after previously being named to the second-team. Byron Hanspard, Jr. collected his third-career second-team honor, while Craig Williams also garnered his second-career second-team honor.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulatively or the two previous semesters and must have participated in at least 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
