ROUND ROCK, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped to Texas A&M, 12-4 on Friday at the Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. The Bears (1-3) fell behind early to the Aggies (3-3) and could not climb back in the game.
The Aggies struck first with a two-out two-run home run in the top of the second inning before scratching across two more runs in the fourth after two BU errors in the frame to go up 4-0.
Baylor responded in the fourth with a two-out double from junior transfer Jack Pineda, following by an RBI-single from junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo to trim the deficit to 4-1.
In the fifth, Texas A&M broke the game open after putting up a five-spot to push its lead to 9-1. Baylor scratched across a run in the bottom half of the frame when second-year freshman Tre Richardson scored second-year freshman Cade Currington from third with an RBI-single.
Later in the sixth, Currington smacked an RBI-single to score Pineda to cut it to 9-3. True freshman Grant Golomb threw two solid scoreless innings to keep the Aggies off the board.
In the eighth, the Aggies added two runs, while in his first at-bat of the season, Kyle Harper crushed his second home run of his career to lead off the frame. Each team added a run apiece late to make the final score, 12-4.
Third-year sophomore Blake Helton (0-1) set a new career-high with six strikeouts, but was tabbed with the loss, while A&M's Dustin Saenz (1-1) earned his first win of 2021.
NOTES
• Helton finished with a career-high six strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
• In his first start of the season, designated hitter Cade Currington went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
• With his 2-for-4 performance, Pineda now has multiple hits in three-of-four game.
• Harper hit his third career home run in the eighth inning.
• Richardson, Pineda, fifth-year senior Andy Thomas, sophomore transfer Antonio Valdez and third-year sophomore Chase Wehsener each have hits in every game this season.
• In his second career appearance, Golomb threw another scoreless two innings while not allowing a hit and striking out one in relief.
QUOTE FROM COACH ROD
"We just really didn't play great fundamentals. There were a couple of plays that were communication errors and that's something that just takes some repetition and some experience. It's going to take time they are all trying the hardest they can and the best they can now that they are playing baseball again. A&M has a really good team, but we just made too many mistakes on defense."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will have a quick turnaround with a 12 p.m. first pitch on Saturday against No. 17 Auburn. BU will finish with Oklahoma in a non-conference matchup on Sunday at 5 p.m.
