Bears earn three first-place votes to be atop the poll
IRVING, Texas – No. 2 Baylor men's tennis was selected as the preseason favorite among the league coaches in the Big 12 Tennis Preseason Poll, the Conference announced Wednesday.
The Bears were atop the list, receiving three first-place votes with 23 points overall, after finishing 2021 as the national runners-up and reigning conference champions. TCU was just behind BU in the poll with 21 points and two first-place votes, while Texas had 19 points with one first-place vote. Rounding out the rest of the poll were Oklahoma (12), Texas Tech (10) and Oklahoma State (5). Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own programs.
Baylor returns five to the 2022 squad in Finn Bass, Adrian Boitan, Christopher Frantzen, Sven Lah and Matias Soto. Marko Miladinović rounded out the Bears' roster, joining the squad in January as part of a freshman class with Justin Braverman and Ethan Muza that brought the roster to 12 with Jacob Brumm, Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, Cole Gromley and Tadeas Paroulek having transferred into the program.
BU is led by the reigning ITA Texas Region Coach of the Year Michael Woodson along with Assistant Coach of the Year Izak Van der Merwe in their sixth and fourth years with the program, respectively. Woodson enters his second season at the helm of the powerhouse.
The Bears open their 2022 campaign at home for three-straight matches, hosting Louisiana at noon and Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. in the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday, and playing SMU on Monday evening at 4 p.m., indoor as well.
