
No. 8 EQ Squares Off With No. 1 SMU

Bears face top-ranked team for second time in as many meets
WACO, Texas – No. 8 Baylor equestrian (1-3, 1-1) is set to square off with No. 1 SMU (1-0, 0-0) on Friday at 9:10 a.m. at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
For the second-straight meet, BU takes on the top-ranked team in the nation. Last time out, the Bears upset former No. 1 TCU, 12-7, at home for their first win of the year. The Mustangs have since taken over the top spot ahead of just their second competition of the season.
Against the Horned Frogs, Baylor swept Flat, 5-0, and grabbed a 3-2 win in Fences to spearhead the upset. BU also swept the Most Outstanding Performer honors, as Dominika Silvestri (Fences), Madison Mitchell (Flat), Elsie Naruszewicz (Horsemanship) and Jenna Meimerstorf (Reining) each were recognized. Additionally, Bella Rosa and Nadalee Vasquez both scored career highs in Horsemanship with tallies of 76.5 and 78.5, respectively.
Earlier this week, Jumping Seat sophomore Annie Vorhies was named the Big 12 Flat Rider of the Month after going 2-0 in October with an MOP honor. She was previously named the Big 12 Fences Rider of the Month in September, alongside Madaline Callaway, who garnered Big 12 Reining Rider of the Month praise.
Vorhies (2-0, Flat) leads a contingent of six Bears who carry above-.500 records into the meet against SMU. Jessica Batton (2-0, Reining), Callaway (3-1, Reining), Silvestri (3-1, Flat), Meimerstorf (2-1-1, Reining) and Vasquez (2-1-1, Horsemanship) join her as some of Baylor's top riders so far in 2022-23.
BU leads the all-time series with SMU, 7-4, but the Mustangs have won each of the last four meetings. Baylor's last win over SMU came on Feb. 17, 2017, in an 8-8 tiebreaker.
SMU reached No. 1 in the latest NCEA rankings after defeating the preseason No. 1 and reigning national champion Oklahoma State, 10-9, in Stillwater, Okla., to open the season. Hosting Baylor will mark the Mustangs' first home meet of the year.
