DENVER – No. 25 Baylor women's tennis opened its weekend road tilt with a 5-2 victory over Denver Friday afternoon at the Denver Tennis Park.
Baylor (3-3) took the doubles point for the fifth-straight match en route to winning the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Denver (1-4) came out first with the 6-3 doubles win on court three over
Isabella Harvison and Paula Baranano, but the Bears evened it up when second-ranked
Alicia Herrero Linana and
Mel Krywoj battled to a 7-5 victory at the top spot. It all came down to court two where
Alina Shcherbinina and
Anita Sahdiieva clinched the opening point with a 7-5 triumph over the Pioneers.
In singles action, No. 73 Shcherbinina was first off the court with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Andrea Burguete at the No. 4 spot. Then, Sahdiieva defeated Toni Nelson, 6-1, 6-3, to give the Bears the 3-1 lead. Baranano clinched the match when she defeated Tatum Burger at the No. 6 spot, 7-6, 6-1.
The Bears pushed the score to 5-0 when Harvison posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Anna Riedmiller at the top of the lineup. Denver closed out the match with three-set victories on courts two and three.
