WACO, Texas – No. 1 Baylor acrobatics & tumbling's
Emily Tobin has been named Athlete of the Week by the NCATA for the third time this season, the organization announced Wednesday.
She earned her first award of the season on February 7 and the second on February 21.
Sophomore base
Riley Chimwala from Plano, Texas, was named Honorable Mention Specialist of the Week.
Tobin, a junior top and tumbler from Templeton, Calif., earned the accolade after she and the Bears bested No. 3 Oregon on Feb. 27 in the Ferrell Center by six points.
In the meet, Tobin competed in 12 heats as well as the team event, leading BU to 11 scores of 9.5 or higher during the meet.
She had a trio of 9.95 scores in the compulsory pyramid, five-element acro and open pyramid. In the tumbling event, she scored a 9.65 in the duo pass and a 9.575 in the six-element pass.
In heat one of acro, Tobin competes an inlocate to low hand-in-hand then press to high with a single base. She is currently only one of two tops in the country to compete the element, the other being freshman
Jordan Gruendler. Three of the five elements the junior competes in the heat are valued at a 10.
In the team event, she competes in two tosses, three acro elements, one of the handstand pyramids, and the two tumbling passes.
NEXT UP
Baylor will travel to Florida to take on Saint Leo on Tuesday, March 8. Start time for the meet is set for 6 p.m. CT in the Sunshine State.
